I would have yanked it out and kept on fishing. you would have laid down in the bottom of the boat and cried like a 5 yr old.

I live between two lakes and my sister used to be a nurse here at the hospital she says they used to get four or five a summer of the weights or a hook in somebody in ER....Yep fishing is dangerous......

zx, do you know if his bait/weight were hung at or above the surface? A recoiling bullet weight returns at approximately 700 feet per second. He's lucky it didn't hit him between the eyes.
Yes, I have heard of this happening before. I think it was Charlie Haralson who told me he had a female client have the excat same thing happen, except hers was imbedded in her shoulder.
Word to the wise, either go get the bait/weight or cut your line as close to the obstuction as possible. NEVER pull on a lure or bait that is hung above the water line. You're only asking for trouble and a lure or hook and weight just isn't worth it.

We were having a family picnic on the side of a pond about 10 years ago. One of the kids got a Carolina rig hung in some brush. I tried to pull it loose by walking straight back with the rod and reel. When it came loose it came at me at head level.
Luckily I was able to turn my head just enough to avoid getting hit in the eye. As it was a half ounce egg weight hit me just below and outside the left eye. By the time I could put my hand up to feel it, then have my cousin look at it I had a knot the size of a strawberry alongside my eye. It could have been a lot worse.
