Unless you are wearing a grass skirt and sleeping in a ditch and eating only road kill, you too are part of 'the problem'.

Heres my opinion ... its gonna go over like a turd in the punchbowl & the reason is : regardless of whether or not it does any damage, people are not going to want to store their rods "bent".

I've thought about making a couple pvc tubes with screw in caps to slide into the hull on my kayak. I have a sit in and they would ride in the front on the center line. Of course they couldn't be rigged, but they would be dry and secure.
I usually use my kayak in the salt and use a Scotty fly rod holder while in transit. In fresh water, I either set the rod between my legs with the tip out over the front of the yak or I will break it down to two peices and lay it on the floor if I am in danger of snagging the tip.

PVC pipe strapped to the outside of the yak. Simple, cheap, effective keeps the long pole out of trouble.

check out the big brain on HLS
that's the ticket thats what's in my Grumann 17 canoe
'cept when the boys at Hobie step up your rods will drop in long wise from the top into a nice secure groove
perhaps formed into a tube 1/3 of the way up for the tip..
I'd say you cannot easily access your rods while seated, with the long rods sliding up the tail but the "Steve's Groove" - it'll allow that access as it'd be top down
Unless you are wearing a grass skirt and sleeping in a ditch and eating only road kill, you too are part of 'the problem'.

Heres my opinion ... its gonna go over like a turd in the punchbowl & the reason is : regardless of whether or not it does any damage, people are not going to want to store their rods "bent". I paddle one of these And was able to make two 9' pvc pipes work admirably WITH NO ALTERATIONS. (yet another advantage of a 13' boat) They're 1.5" or 2" ID (larger dia needed for spin rods, of course), and I bought the cheaper, more flexible stuff since I knew it was going to need to bend inside the boat. They even come in 9' lengths at Lowe's. (omen?) They can have some schmutz in them, so a quick blast with the hose might be wise. I keep the end of the tube sticking outside the hatch to load the rod, and slide the rod and grip in up to the reel. I then hold the tube and carefully bend and slide the whole deal so that the tube ends up in contact with the inside of the hull. I suppose that if I was real concerned about keeping the reel pristine, I'd leave the neoprene thing on it. I won't drive a substantial distance with the rod in the tube that way, as the vibration induced abrasion could eventually damage the rod. Wouldn't leave it stored that way for more than a few days either. Its quite handy though for storing a rigged and ready back-up rod or your 8/9wt in case the wind kicks up and your 6/7wt can't hack it.

I think it would be better to strap the tubes on top in a straight line down the hull. Cut a slit part way to load the rods. Not much better than the above ideas, except if the fishing is slow you can launch bottle rockets at other boats. Fox 1, Fox 2 !!!
P.S. That RAM-X hull material could come in handy also. Raming Speed!

Not a bad idea, but I don't see why you would want to store the flyrod where you can't get to it while on the water? If you are not going to use it while in the yak, why not leave it rigged but broken down to 2 peices, and store it anywhere.
I strap mine to the top of my crate going straight behind me (you can store several at a time), that way I can get to them anytime and they are ready to use while in the kayak also.

That's definitely more convenient for quicker rod access, but can cause involuntary outbreaks of profanity when in winding mangrove channels, brushy rivers, fighting a lively fish, etc. Putting the rod up at a higher angle where its not protruding horizontally from the boat frequently interferes with fly casting.

There is definitely a possibility of breaking a rod, but I have not done it yet. I use TFO rods, it will only cost me a 30 min drive to get it replaced if I ever break one this way.
I just like being able to grab the rod I want when I am ready to use it on the water, without getting out of the kayak. If you store your rods like the original poster suggested, you cant get to them until you beach and get out. If I didnt need to get to them until I got out, I would just break the rod down while rigged and store it anywhere on the kayak.
