Yak designers TAKE NOTE we need this ! inboard rod storage, via moulded in grooves slots, pockets, etc... obviously, I dont think it hurts a fly rod to store bent for a day.. I hate flickr - bigger image here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/41001765@N02/4421103658/

Unless you are wearing a grass skirt and sleeping in a ditch and eating only road kill, you too are part of 'the problem'.

What stops you from hitting your stored rod with your hands when you paddle?
When I take my fly rod, which is rare, I keep mine disassembled, until I get out of my boat. When I get back in my boat, I keep the real seated, but dismantle the rods. Then I put them back in the case, with the butt an reel sticking out.
I can't fly cast sitting down anyways, so there is no use in keeping mine assembled.

With a properly designed gutter that has a bit of a lip in the proper spots, a rod would snap in place , and store below the level of the deck, thus staying protected
one rod in hand another in storage, (or two, or even more) would add the versatility at the boys on the huge bass boats enjoy
I've a bit of a similiar set up with tubes, fastened inside below the rails on my canoe - I really like the set up of quick and safe and flat storage

My Redfish 12 swallows 2 fly rods inside, one on each side of the foam running down the middle. Having broken rods whil kayaking, I put mine inside at the first sign of trouble, like when trying to get into Yegua Creek from Nails Creek State Park.
One trick that I have done is to use the hair bands sold by the bundle (at Academy no less) with a cord lock over one end and snug one down on top of both ends of a fly rod broken down into 2 pieces. My 9 foot rod is just 4.5' long and easier to just set down in the well of the kayak between my legs without having it stick out over the bow. You cna leave it all rigged up with a fly on it, just reeled down where the fly is in the tip top.

check out the big brain on HLS
that's the ticket thats what's in my Grumann 17 canoe
'cept when the boys at Hobie step up your rods will drop in long wise from the top into a nice secure groove
perhaps formed into a tube 1/3 of the way up for the tip..
I'd say you cannot easily access your rods while seated, with the long rods sliding up the tail but the "Steve's Groove" - it'll allow that access as it'd be top down

Not want to rain on any ones parade but, how do you keep the rods flexed in storage. They are built to want to live straight when stored. From the illustration I am not getting the picture of them staying arced. Unless the attachment is large and in the way. One more observation is that this will not work on S.I.S 'yaks. If I'm wrong please prove me so, and I will convert my S.I.S ASAP!!!!!

Hey DH - first off - can we get a colorado report PLEASE ! and
I say flex em for 8 hours as i'm a flex em or f'em , bamboo free, kinda man.
I'm lobbying for the future, as I want a Hobie or a Malibu SOT to be manufactured with full length rod gutters
Believe me, once we've had em, we'd demand em

I dont own a yak (yet), but it sounds like a great idea to me. I bet one of those companies takes off with your idea.

Not a bad idea, but I don't see why you would want to store the flyrod where you can't get to it while on the water? If you are not going to use it while in the yak, why not store it broke down in half (you can leave it rigged)?
I strap mine to the top of my crate going straight behind me (you can store several at a time), that way I can get to it anytime and they are ready to use!

The in hull rod tubes in a Hobie Pro angler will protect the front 4' while the rests in a relatively straight line past the paddler on each side. There are bungee hold downs and cupped surfaces to organize the part that is not inside the tube. When I am spider rigging (8 rods of varying lengths to 12 ') for crappie , I carry several rods in the 12' length assembled and stabbed in the rod tubes. They bend slightly as they go past me but not much. I preload rods in the boat the night before so I can cut down on set up time the next morning. It is great for standing in since they built in floor boards just for that purpose. http://www.hobiecat.com/media/video/video_pro_angler.htmlYou really cant see the rod tubes in use until the end of this 1 minute video overview.
