My dad used to pull me out of school for a couple of days each fall to go salmon fishing in Muskegon, MI. Those were some of the most memorable trips and best memories that I will never lose! I am glad to see you taking your boy. I hope the weather holds up for ya. I am going to try and go down tomorrow since I got skunked up at the Guad yesterday.

Bernard, thanks for sharing your technique. Sounds like the crappie may have just thinned out a little.
And yep, those whites are tasty...I love stocking up the deep freezer this time of year!

Josh W, you asked about fishing from the bank. We were fishing the Nueces Sunday, and we launched at the airport ramp between Three Rivers and George West (look for the sign on Hwy 281 that says "airport." When we were coming in after a day's fishing, there were some people fishing from the bank, less than 100 yards from the boat launch (as you're standing on the boat ramp looking at the river, it'll be to your left). One fellow was coming back from that way, and he must have had 15 to 20 whites on his stringer.

Hit the River again today. Took a friend that has been wanting to go for the longest time. Got Limits of whites and about 9 crappie and 1 catfish. Minnows White Rodrunners and red/white roadrunners. Great day. Caught more fish on moving roadrunners than the minnows it seemed like. I know it is not true but it seemed pretty even. Want to go up farther next time. I wonder how much time we have left?

Been my experience that the fishermen give up long before the fish do!
My favorite time when the crowds thin out!
Usually after the whites finish their run the gaspergou start theirs, and you catch them using the same lures and techniques. Just imagine catching a 5# gou on the same tackle you caught the white bass! Also don't overlook targeting catfish!

It's a freshwater drum, and they grow to be anywhere from 1 to 3 pounds on average but have been known to reach 20#. I've caught them in the Nueces up to 5#, and you will think you have the next world record as they are strong fighters especially in a current. They have big bones and large scales and the filets are not very thick which makes them hard to clean, but they are really a good eating fish if you eat them when they are fresh. They don't freeze very good long term and don't taste as good once frozen. It's not a gamefish so there is no limit!

Oh, OK, we called them sheephead up on Lake Erie. I take it those aren't the same sheephead down in the ocean though. I did catch one of those last time out and one of the guys was there called it a drum, so that makes sense. It cleaned up nice though and tasted good. It was 17" long so my biggest fish by a couple of inches. And I'll try and eat anything once!!!
