I guarantee that every graphite rod will pass this test, so therefore, yes, it is silly. If you really want to test a rod in the store, you can check if it is splined correctly by bending it against the floor while rotating it. You'd be surprised to see how rare it is for a mass produced rod to be built correctly. Also, "made in USA" is great, but only if the product is at least equal to the other like priced models. Have you ever handled a $280 Made in the USA Ardent reel? Would you buy it for even 50% off? I know I wouldn't.

Many of the biggest rod makers in the US do not spine their rods. They find little value in building on the spine and instead build on the straightest axis.

I was at the Garland BPS store tonight and held the carbonlite rods. They are indeed lite. They felt as light as my Dobyns. I liked the 7'6" MH.

I have 2 of the BPS Carbonlite Rods and 1 Carbonlite reel. I have not tested the reel out yet. As for braid, yes they handel it very well. The eyes have titanium rings inside them and are extremely smooth. The sesitivity of this rod is, to say the least, incredable. The weight is very light and balances well with most any reel I have put on it. They have great backbone too.
