I have a Mercury outboard. Its still under warranty. So i use what the manufactorer recommends which is Quicksilver. If my motor wasnt under warranty i wouldnt go buy just any off brand oil like Super Tech. I would by a well known name brand.

However, here is the funny part. Quicksilver is owned by Mercury and Yamalube is owned by Yamaha. Both Yamaha and Mercury buy their oil from Citgo Petrolium Inc. Look at the MSDS sheets. They just put their labels on the bottles. Do you actually think that each company has a specific blend of a standard TC-W3 for each of their outboards? I dont think so. Its just a way for each company to rake in more cash with outboard oil that they say is desgned for their product.

Run a good synthetic oil like Amsoil HP injector oil, you will get much less carbon build up then with Yamalube oil or other traditional TCW3 rated oils. Your warranty is not an issue either if you run something other then Yamalube, they passed that Magnuson Moss warranty law many years ago to prevent the manufacturers from voiding warranties for not using their own products.

Think about this, would you rather buy oil from a company that does nothing but research and development of oil only, or from an outboard manufacture who knows [censored] about oil other then what they spec out to a large oil manufacture who makes the oil for them and they stick their name on it??

If you use the Optimax oil from Mercury you are not using a TCW-3 oil. They don't require it but they do recommend the Opti oil or their Premium Plus oil for their Optimax motors which is TCW-3 rated. All of the XS motors are supposed to use the Premium Plus.

I think if everyone here had run Amsoil HP Injector before there would be no debate in what oil to use.........

My motor was made in 1957. It has run on almost every oil out there. I run a 24:1 mix. I cant tell a difference between any of them. After 52 years the compression is as good as the day it was built. Plugs last me a full year, and would last longer if I didnt change them just as a annual tune up. I didnt know walmart had 2 stroke oil, but I bet its not much different than the "brand Name " oils. I sure hope my motor dont fail because I wont spend $30 a gallon for oil. Its just getting broke in.

like stated before, oil from a company that does nothing but oil is the smart suggestion.
and as stated above as with batterys, tires, etc etc. oil is another product that is made by one company and sold under many names, I strongly recommend the pennzoil synthentic, have decarbed my 82 johnson and now use only pennzoil synthetic and can't believe the difference in the way it runs (much much better) almost no smoke and actually got about 200rpm back after all said and done.
compared to the other oils price for price this is very cheap insurance.

Throw some HPI in there and you will see NO smoke, a clean prop, and a much faster throttle response.
