Ok guys, I went back several pages and fond nothing on this. I have a 2002 Ranger with a 2003 Yamaha 225 hp. I bought the boat used, and I need to know if I still have to put Yammy lube in it. I mean does it meak a difference. AT $39.00 a gal for yamaha lube or $10.00 a gal for TECH oil. Both have the same rating. TCW III

can I switch over or keep using the High Dollar oil. This is the last boat I am going to buy and want it to last awhile

do a decarb with seafoam, run the pennzoil synthetic after that and you wont regret it.
pennzoil at wallyworld 27.00 gal. less smoke and runs much better, do the decarb first tho.

You should be able to find a boat shop in your area that sells the Yama-lube from a 55 gal. barrel for a lot less, you bring your own jug to fill. I would NOT use the engine tech, as I see too many running problems with it.

I use the Pennzoil Premium Plus in the 2.5 gallon jug for under 30 dollars at Academy. I've never seen or heard of any problems with this oil and its been endorsed by someone I am confident in his advise.

I'm old school. Yamalube in Yammys,...Quicksilver in mercs and ( formerly ) OMC in Johnnyrudes.

People get $19,000 engines and want to save $20 on oil. I dont get it.

I've never seen proof that buying name brand oil did anything but enrich the manufacturer. I have read enough from people I trust to know the effects of oil to go by their recommendations.

I don't really care to spend one penny more for a product unless I have some kind of idea its worth it. Reality is the outboard manufacturers use the same kind of tactics to try and get their customers to buy their oil as the car manufacturers do. Someone show me their oils are better and I will buy whats shown to be best.

Case in point: My family had a Yamaha bike dealership for years. I could tear one down and tell you if they ran Yamalube, Castrol or an off brand in most cases. Yamalube didnt build up unburnt oil under the piston rings as much as others did...(assuming the same gas/oil mixture.) Most of the stuck pistons and burnt lower rod bearings we encountered used another brand besides the two I mentioned. I ran Castrol bean oil in my racer and Yamalube in the stock dirt bikes.

A friend of mine ran a single 6 gallon tank of Istasca 2 stroke oil in his Johnson outboard one day over my objections once. We had to be towed back to the dock within 20 min. It stuck a piston.

I know merc oil will be fine in my OMC. As will several other brands. But I start with a single brand of oil ( I pre-mix) and I havent changed it. My engine is a 1980 V4 Evinrude, btw. All I ever replaced were electronic parts and a headgasket. No way I'm skimping on oil. It's just not a big enough expense to justify the risks. Oops..almost forgot. I put a gear set in the lower unit when I bought the engine ( used ) in 1995.

Since you want to keep this boat for a long time, use what the manf. Reccommends, why 2nd guess it to just save a few pennies

Thanks for all the information and suggestions. I prob. will stay wil Yamma Lube, but just wanted to know if it was worth the expense of this oil -V- others. And Javelin, this will be my last boat, so I do want to keep it running with as little expense as possible.

I ran the Johnson/Evinrude stuff in my motor for years. Somebody convinced me to switch to Amsoil. Amsoil is a little more expensive but well worth it IMO. I agree to spend $ on oil in a motor that costs thousands.

I've heard Amsoil is good but never used it.
