Sounds like you need to release all fish in the shade in a net at 40 foot of water and you're survival rate will increase!

Great Data Carl, can you explain the creation of the salt dip for the TDs on the board that would like to implement this procedure.
Would be interesting to see a comparison vs a night event to see if the general heat of the day in the lake itself had any effect but most likely it would be hard to discern from the "heat of the day" effects on Angler livewells who did not use ice.
Personally I hope everyone looking at this study is "shocked" - shocked right into taking better care of their fish. After only 6 years of seeing it first hand we decided no more July tournaments - it was the only way to prevent some from riding around with 85+ degree water in their livewells. Most anglers make the adjustment when the air temps are 95+ (by June) but our worst mortality rates are always higher than normal in May when the water temps jump considerably but the air temps might not be extreme (and few think they need ice yet) - not sure if it's the heavy feeding on the shad spawn in May or the water temp jump in the lake but the fish come in looking spent in May.

Great Post Carl, Very informative and I will surely now follow the sure life livewell care instructions to the letter.
Do not know the cost or time needed to get this type of weigh in done. But would you be willing to help with club level tournament weigh ins. My club may have a Sept tourny at Amistad, or Falcon and would love to see if we could arrange for your team to be there during weighin to assist with fish care.

i had a bioligist tell me that they did a study on fork during a hourly payback tournie and the results were that 40% of the fish weighed in died. taht kinda shocked me. and thats an hourly tournie. How long ago did this occur? I believe they have changed a lot of thier release methods, primarily with a specific boat that has care tanks and releases the fish all over the lake.

The fact that the survival rate for the sick fish was better than that for the non sick makes me wonder if the sample size was big enough or if the different categories were divided equally between the two pens.

Almost 40% mortality is a good rate for a summer tournament? Sounds awful to me. You are correct. BUT, some anglers were asked to do nothing more than run their livewells since we had such a low turnout team wise. This shows the importance of livewell care with a relatively low loss of fish. All they did was catch them and run their livewells (the one's asked not to do anything). Others did their fish care as they normally would as nothing was said to them for comparison purposes. This basically shows you with 90 degree water temps what "normal" running of the livewell does.

Your right. The sample size was small. Each category was divided in half between pens so no overcrowding, so to speak would occur. The only thing not determined with this sample size was what kind of livewell did each fish come from. There was a big difference in boat and livewell size in this particular tournament. The next tournament with the Dissolved Oxygen meter test will determine a lot of that info. Some livewells just can't hack it without the fish care procedures in place. Even on a small limit of fish during 90 degree water temps.

Very important work you are doing, the more data the better.
The August 2nd tournament will be part of it as well. That will also be the last segment of the fizzing study. Livewell care pamphlets will be distributed this time to everyone and procedures demanded to be used during the tournament. We will see the difference between nothing (July) and what we know works (August).

Curious as to the size distribution of the living/dying fish. Did you keep track and was there any noticable pattern, i.e. mostly the big ones dying.
Also what was availability of food to these fish if they were in a livewell for hours and in pens for 3 days?
