We fished Proctor today and got skunked. The water was about 87 degrees and water was still.....no wind at all.
There were dead fish of all types floating everywhere.
I am wondering if the lake is in the process of turning over............looked like it to me?
Not a fun trip and the lake looks like hell..........

If there is pesticide run off in a water body it does not mean that the chemical was automatically applied within 25 ft of the water body. No matter what your little license training book says! It can go further than that if the right conditions are present. I would be very skeptical of that information until proof is privided. The farmers are always the first to get blamed but it very rarely turns out to be their fault. Not saying it is impossible just wait until proof is provided. Another thing to consider is the fact that that lake has a history of summer fish kills in just this kind of weather.

I would think if it were a pesticide kill the volume of dead fish would be greater than what I saw this morning.

Sent you one back. Good to hear from you. Does Steve Bradbury still hang around here? Still haven't caught as many hybrids in a day as he and I did on Proctor that hot Summer morning about 3 years or more ago.

Something is definitely up. There are dead fish floating everywhere and along the bank. I pulled my boat up to the bank and it smelled from dead fish. A lot along the shore.

4 weeks and still fish found floating I would think it is something other then a lake turnover. The bite has turned off since 4 weeks ago for me.(on all types of fish) I have never seen so many big cats, hybirds, and black bass floating. It is sad to see, how long does a lake turnover last? I have seen the lake turnover before but the number of dead fish was not any where close to what you can see floating now.

Hate to hear about the dead fish! I fish Ray Hubbard and we are seeing dead carp quite a bit! Sad! Someone said it was due to the oxygen level changing so quickly.
When life gets you down, go fishing!

Rumor I heard yesterday was one of the pecan orchards used an illegal pesticide. When the big storm came through 4 weeks ago, the pesticide was washed into the lake and killed fish. I was told the orchard is in pretty big trouble.

I was out Sunday morning and there are dead fish everywhere, more than usual. The whites are still biting though, got my limit. I ate them last night to and I'm still kicking!

fished proctor this weekend fishing was great it's hot and shallow with a really shallow thermocline (jumped in to find out for sure) low oxygen = dead fish it happens

I don't understand the shallow thermocline theory. During the past Summers, I would have to fish live shad for hybrids as shallow as 10 ft to keep them from dying due to the thermocline. The only reason they died is because I was forcing them below the thermocline. Fish are pretty smart and stay above the low oxygen layer. I have not seen a kill like this since the golden algea kill on the Brazos River.

the shallow thermocline from murky water and rapid heating just means less space for the fish and there's always the possibility of other factors at work, but for the most part it's just low O2
