For me, it depends on the sunlight penetration. I think Watermelon red can be a little over the top in clear water situations with the sun blasting(like a metal flake paint job on a banging lowrider). I prefer watermelon/black in that case or just plain old green pumpkin.

I like watermelon red (and use it a lot) but there have been times when I can catch more numbers and bigger fish on other colors. I think about all of the watermelon/red lures that the bass look at (since its the latest fad) and use something completely different in color. Something out of the ordinary might just peaks the fishes interest. But that's just my opinion.

When the bite is slow use some Spike-It Dip-N-Dye on the head or tail. Any color will do if you put it on a fish's nose. The Dip-N-Dye gives them something different to target.

Stress less, relax more. Go fishing.

I agree with your timing, that is what I do. Late spawn early summer I start switching to Watermelon or Watermelon Candy. I think the Watermelon Red imitates Crawfish better whereas the Watermelon Candy imitates a Bluegill, the Watermelon Gold does a good job of that too.

Seems like to me that watermelon/red has been the color of choice for me on several different East Texas lakes.

Watermelon & watermelon/red sucks in most brands.
The only watermelon or watermelon/red plastics that work for me are Berkley products.

Green pumpkin & pumpkinseed are the top producing colors for me.

Remember that thought about "most brands sucking other than Berkley", if you ever come to Rayburn or Toledo Bend. rolfmao

Wat/Red is a fairly consistent color on MOST lakes. But don't get stuck on it. Seasonal changes and different lakes & water color can lead you to different and more productive colors. And with some of the names of the new colors you just "have" to try them out-- Watermelon Magic (for those secret times when NOOOObody is looking), Mardi Gras (fished ONLY during Mardi Gras), Tequila Sunrise (after a rough night out "log jamming"), Junebug ( used when all the dead bugs are stuck on your windshield from the trip to the lake). bannana2

Alot depends on the water conditions (Clear, mercy, muddy, etc.) I will throw a color that I know I have caught fish on first. Then go to other colors that seem to be popular by area anglers. You can hang me from a tree high noon at the court yard but I will throw a Grape or June Bug just because I have confidence in that color.

Hey, I've noticed that folks from the Panhandle aren't averse to having a cold one! cheers

I go pheasant hunting every year with a bunch of guys from Floydada. Definitely some party dogs!

people get thirsty in this desert called the panhandle

One of many mottos in the Panhandle is you may not always catch fish , but you can always catch a buzz.
