I'm fishing Belton Lake and I am having trouble hooking up with bass on soft platics... I have heard that "all you need is Watermelon/Red baits" but I have been fishing them and they ain't workin'! I have just about every bait under the sun, so I'll keep trying- but is it a myth that you can't get skunked out on WMLN/RD???

You can get skunked anyplace, anytime. When they ain't bitin, it doesn't matter what you throw.

For Belton, that's usually a good rule to follow. Go with several watermelon/somethings and if that doesn't work try a baitfish looking plastic and if that doesn't work try green pumpkin and if all those don't work try a bunch of cold beer.

Hey, I've noticed that folks from the Panhandle aren't averse to having a cold one! cheers

I go pheasant hunting every year with a bunch of guys from Floydada. Definitely some party dogs!

Lately its been green pumpkin for me at Belton and I'm fishing from shore and still catching fish! Occasionally they'll hit a wat/red lizard on my c-rig, but the grn pumpkin usually works to start 'em off!

Choke is another one of the Watermelon/whatever color lakes also from all I've read on here & caught. This past weekend talking to some tournament fishers, the color was WHITE. So maybe try some white or pearl colors with the warmer temps, grass coming in & baitfish spawning.

I have seen times when they prefer just plain watermelon in clear water. I could be wrong but I think wtm red imitates a bream pattern. I've observed fish prefer wtm red to wtm early in the spring especially when the sun is out, but as the water warms into summer they seem to like wtm better and even begin to shy away from wtm red when it sunny in the summer.

rolfmao Grass is what grows on the bank at BLORA- too bad almost none of it grows in the lake!

Thanks and please keep the advice coming. I have rigged up a few baits that I think will work this week so I will update as we go.

It is my go to color. Whether it's F5's flukes or craws I usually have a watermelon red tied on.

Truth is you are normally catching fish on whatever bait and color you are throwing or throw the most... Right now wat/red is the big hyped up color so a large majority of guys are throwing it more than other colors and catching fish on it when they are around em.
