Devildog, if it ain't your style or ruffles your feathers don't post. If the man wants to catch shark that tastes like [censored], then that is his right last time I checked. The way I understood his post he just wanted ONE freakin tooth and then to release the shark. I might question his sanity for reaching in its mouth to pull one out, but that is hardly comparable to an Asian cutting the fins off a shark and throwing it up on the rocks. That would be an illegal act. One tooth! Thats all I wanted! And just where a freshwater Guide could go too "maybe" have the chance to get one. Thanks again folks. Bittercreek

Call any shell shop in Port Aransas or on SPID in Corpus. They all have huge bins full of shark teeth of all shapes and sizes. Hell there's one in Port A that has fossilized "Meglodon" teeth for sale for about $450.00 I tried to reach into a live sharks mouth once with a really long set of needle nose pliers and couldn't beg a tooth loose. We let that dude go alive and well and fully intact. Just my opinion. They're fun to catch and properly prepared great to eat but need to be respected too. If I ever see somebody cut the fins off of a shark and toss him on the rocks I'm going to call the law or beat him with a shark carcass whichever comes easiest. Take care everybody and be safe.

So you're going to put a big tiger shark through an ordeal that to bring it in requires it exhausted almost to the point of death just to yank a tooth out of it's jaw and cause it further pain? That's pretty selfish and VERY BAD sportsmanship IMO. Sharks are way too important to the eco system and threatened enough to warrant a second thought about trying to catch one for jewelry.
....Maybe "guides" should be required to take a course in biology and sportsmanship to become one. The shark might be a little tired after the fight, but it's not going to die. They also lose thousands of teeth throughout their life time. One tooth wouldn't make a difference for the shark. I would be more worried about getting the tooth out without losing a hand.

Hi Mike-
I'm sure I'm rehashing a question that's old & tired on this discussion forum. Nevertheless, I was curious if I need to be concerned about any bacteria issue, or whatever, in the bays around Rockport, Port A, etc. I'm talking about cuts & scrapes thing (me) rather than the fish- unless the fish have been a concern as well.
Question 2 is if you'd choose bay or gulf if you were trying to get a 15 yr. old interested in saltwater fishing. He'd certainly be more interested in volume at this point than big fish- just something, anything that hammers a line.
Cheers,
Jeff

Question #1
Vibrio vulnificus is allways present to some extent but worse when the water warms up. I would be far more concerned about stepping on a ray however. Any cut or scrap that comes into contact with saltwater should be cleaned as soon as you can and bandaged with antibiotic ointment. It's still very rare disease but anyone who fishes the salt should be aware of the symptoms since this bad boy can kill you in 24 hours or less.
If you have the following symptoms swelling, pain, fever, blistering or redness run dont walk to the emergency room.

Thanks very much 'Spiny Norman'. With a name like vulnificus, it can't be good. I'll heed your precautions.

Jeff In regard to Q1: What Spiny said. Typically you don't have to worry about it in waters that are well circulated like the surf or near passes that extend to the gulf. It's usually more prominent in areas that don't exchange much water like back bays and lakes. Carry bleach on board and rinse down with bleach and fresh water and you'll be fine. Q2: I find that fishing in the gulf (offshore) is just downright addictive. You have the odd off day where you don't catch much but they're fewer and further between than bay fishing. And you really don't have to go very far offshore to catch some real trophies. So my vote is offshore. If you have the means then a private charter is preferable to a party boat.

...then that is his right last time I checked. Nobody has the right to fish in Texas. It is a privilege you obtain by paying your license fee same as a drivers license. ...I might question his sanity for reaching in its mouth to pull one out... I was going to ask how he planned on getting it out because, well, they just don't spit them out when you ask. And don't pick on Jarheads, results may vary. Especially if you tell them NOT to do something and one or more of your eyebrows are raised or your lips are curled.
Death smiles at everyone, Marines smile back.
