I'm new to crappie fishing, but TFF has got me interested. I bought Ernest Paty's video and a 12' Cabelas crappie combo. I've already got a ton of jigs from trolling the Walmart clearance section for years.

I think I could handle Lewisville since there are so many docks and marinas, but fishing Ray Roberts seems wide open.
I know of one marina and no private docks. There are a couple of smaller bridges that I'm sure get hit almost everyday.
Since Ray Roberts is a relatively young lake, it's got LOTS of submerged trees. How do you narrow the area that you want to fish down?

Do you have a boat? Makes a huge difference.

Look for trees adjacent to depth changes like along creek channels, drop offs, old road beds.

Also if there are alot of hardwood trees and there is a cedar trees in the middle of them, fish the cedar trees. Sometime the fish like the different kind of trees in the middle of alot of one kind of trees.

Isolated tree groups produce better for me.

if you got a boat and a fish finder.... find the fish that is holding to the trees once that is found. get the jigs out... this is my secret to fishing trees and not loosing all my jigs and having a successful day. get some of the crappie nibbles from walmart.. i got both chartuese and the pink ones... place the nibble on the end of the hook but don't let the hook go thru it.... then if possible fish right up against the tree you desire..the nibble will keep your jig from getting hung in the trees but you will have to set a harder hook set once you get a thump.... you should be able to feel the jig bumping the trees.. once you find the right color jig you should tear them up... crappies can not resist a small jig imitating a small insect climbing the side of a tree. Every now and then you might get a bass so hold on to your rod because a 2 to 3lb bass hitting a jig on 4lb to 6lb test is a heck of a surprise lol....

Bingo. Look for steep banks along the creek channel. The water temp, clarity and weather pattern will determine how deep the fish are going to be. I usally try the transition areas (stumps and brush) off the bank and depending on the bite will work shallower or deeper. Good luck and tight lines.

I have a narrow trihull that I'm still working on to make it float, but I just bought a 14' johnboat to go with my 6hp Johnson. No fish finder yet, but that'll be coming soon.
