I really tried to stay out of this.......here it comes....and I know this hog was shot but many thought it was with a knife....as I did.
Let me say that I grew up in east Texas and I have replaced more bottom strands of barbed wire cause of hogs then most and I have shot and killed with a gun (mostly a 308 ) and a pistol a (colt anaconda iron sites and a Ruger super Blackhawk with a scope) and a bow (a Widow and a Martin) more hogs then you can imagine my best was 19 in one year. Keep in mind all I had to do was go out my back door to find them.
Not to go all crazy but whats the point in using dogs to pin them down and killing the hog with a knife? I suppose I understand that its a rush and it certainly takes a great deal of courage and skill, I thought that by using a bow that I was taking it to the next level, because of the idea of stalking hogs on the ground I came to be a pretty skilled archer won a couple of 3D shoots....
I guess I always was taught that you respect what you kill no matter what it is, and as a hunter and outdoors man anytime I see anything that is from a fringe group (killing hogs with a knife or bears with a spear seem pretty fringe to me) it throws up a red flag...this coming from someone who's main passion is catch and release carp angling, the more outside of the norm a sport is the more it gives people that would take away what we live to do ammo so to speak, what this sort hunting dose is takes away the resource management side of it and makes it a blood sport a kill for the sake of killing idea....
I understand at the end of the day either way you go you have a dead hog....but there is a line there. At some point it's no longer a hunter that is out for food or a person looking to protect property, and when you are killing a animal with a knife I personally think its more to fulfill some sort of strange blood lust or you have to prove to yourself how manly you are....who knows I guess I am just not primal enough to get it. 19 Hogs in a year is not bad! Try 19 hogs in a day, well actually it was 18.. The use of dogs is a must when you have to find them in corn fields and thick brush. Yes, these hogs don't do the Farmers and Ranchers any good, they will cut down a field of corn over night and I'm not kidding. We don't sit in a tower and watch and wait nor do we hunt with pistols or bow just for the sport. It's a big deal to go out and get as many hogs as you can and the use of dogs and a group of guys is a must. If and when the dogs pinned down the hog, knifing is a must for the safety of our dogs. We are not paid eradicators, we just love the sport of hunting with dogs and the farmers/ranchers give us full excess of thier property to hunt and do what ever it is neccessary to rid of or control them hogs. The final end product is Smoked Sausages, Smoked Meat, Roast!

Where is DirtyBass on such a hot topic? I hunted a hog with dogs one time. I stepped in a pile of coyote carp and it ruined my day.

You know I have found one good thing about hogs. A few years ago we started getting cactus sprouting up in our hay field. Well the hogs came along rooted up every one that popped up and we have never had them (cactus) come back. That was the one thing that I have ever seen useful about a hog. They ridded of us of all the cacti that was sprouting up.

Great Hog! I love the knife stories. Ignore the haters!
edit: made it a little more politically correct for the virgin ears around here.

i love hunting hogs we use dogs to bay them as well, but usually tie them up and haul them out. If you need any hogs taken off your land I can get them off either with the dogs or with traps. P.S. Wild hog goes for about 50cents a pound and a round trap can get about 10 hogs in it at a time

Yep I'd do it.You must trust your dogs though.Back on the bayou we used to breed some SERIOUS "catching power".Nothing like watching two 80 pound pits and a pair of Leopard curs put in work.I live in the city now,but I still hunt.So if anybody has a hog problem,I'd be glad to help.

Here in hawaii we have to use dogs and knives because you don't want anyone hear you fire off any shots. it gives away your location to other hunters (not much land to hunt when your on an island so you protect your spots) and its kinda illegal.
Fat is not a handicap, its your punishment for lack of self control.

Nice Hog!!!! I personally don't have the intestinal fortitude to kill one with a knife and dogs. Even though I don't choose to kill a hog in this manner, it's well within his legal rights. I like to shoot them with a bow and can't really figure out the difference in killing one with a knife and killing one with a big nasty broadhead. They both cut turough the animal and cut major vessels and organs to promote the dying process. Either way I've rambeled on enough. Good job and nice hog!!!
Nate Tight lines!
