Not if the spill was where the Carp were spawning. hmmm...

Carp spawned 4-5 weeks ago in north central Texas. Just so you can educate yourself about the subject..

Yes Bob, I reported it last week. Game Warden from Somerville County came to have a look and passed the information on the the TPW Biologist.

I contacted John Tibbs a biologist with the TPWD and below is his responce. Looks like it might not be the evil bowfisher after all. rolfmao

Brandon,

I carbon-copied our fish kill biologist in this response. Im sure she will have some insights for you on what is going on. I know in my district we have seen this in the past with buffalo. We attributed it to spawning stress and bacterial infection. The problem was limited just to buffalo and we saw no other problems.

Thanks, sometimes it's nice to have some proper education. bang However....Carp are still spawning on several bodies of water as are Gar. Hell, even Bass are still spawning in one of my favorite ponds.

Joan Glass with TPWD just sent me this inormation.

Brandon: I investigated the carp kill at Lake Pat Cleburne on May 19th. The first reports were from Saturday May 27th. What I found were very old dead fish some over 3 weeks old and mostly skeletons and scales. The only fish species observed was common carp ranging from 22 to 27 inches. The original reports stated that the dead fish were in the shallow areas of the lake. At my investigation most of the dead fish were on the windward side from the dam to half way back. Due to storms and wind direction changes, these fish could have died anywhere on the lake. Water quality at the main body of the lake was well within normal ranges.

I checked at the very back of the lake and there were some pockets of stagnant water. Since carp breed in shallow, backwater areas, these fish could have been washed into the lake from breeding sites. The bodies were too decomposed to find the cause of death.

I did not find any indications of problems in the main body of the lake. I did find pockets of shallow water with heavy organic loading (leaf packs and heavy algal mats and hydrogen sulfide odors) at the back of the lake. If the carp were up in these areas breeding, they would die during the early morning hours. It would take a few days for the dead carp to float and then a rainstorm to wash them into the lake to be where they are now. There was a very strong storm last week with 3 to 6 inches of rainfall.

It is my opinion based on the entire lake that these fish died in breeding areas due to poor oxygen levels and later were washed into the main body of the lake with the last storm event.

You are tired of it? How do you think we feel when we get pounced.

Ok. The 20+ thousand carp I have observed over the last 3 weeks on Whitney, Granbury and Benbrook were done. The catfish are starting to spawn on Whitney though. I guess I should range out more to ther lakes.

you mean like the Striped Bass, Florida Largemouth Bass, Hybrid Striped Bass and your beloved hydrilla. Considering there is pretty much only one natural lake in Texas I'd say most fish are NOT indigenous to our lakes.
