I sent off for some commercial soap bait a couple of yers ago on the reccomendation of TFF's. Used it on jug lines. Didnt do any better or any worse than any other bait. Biggest advantage is it smells nice.

I have some frozen catfish bellies I am going to try out as cut bait soon as I get a chance to go again. I bought them as breaded catfish nuggets, atleast thats what it said on the package and what the picture was. Got it openened and it was skin on catfish bellies. Started to throw it out but want to give it a try as cut bait.

You are correct, you can not use a game fish or any part of a game fish as bait.

Albert and Tim, that is an excellent point to consider. It also brings up another question, how do the folks who use rough fish entrails, organs and filets as bait prove to a game warden where that bait actually came from?
I usually cut the soap into 1/2" to 3/4" cubes, depending on the hook size. If the soap is kinda dried out and crumbly, go for a little larger chunk and squeeze it back together to reinforce the cracks.
Flush twice, it's a long way to Houston!

Yeah, but what if it was a mudcat/poly/bullhead fillet? I've only caught one poly that I know of so I'm not a real expert on the visual differences among the fillets. I did notice that the mudcat that I caught had real fragile skin upon skinning it. But I ended up not eating it I don't use those guys for bait ... yet! By the way, I do give a lot of creedance to Tiny's posts and website. I use fresh shad whenever I can get them. Doing mostly bank fishing recently I can usually net them around dusk and dawn with calm water. At Somerville I catch 2" Threadfin from the bank but I suppose there are Gizzards somewhere around there. I keep them in a round bucket with an aerator, non-iodized salt and a few drops of that 'keep alive' formula from Gander. I put the floaters on ice so they are 'fresh' for another 2 hours and change out my bait ever 30 - 40 minutes. These times may not reflect Tiny's advice 100% (it's been a while since I read his website) but I think the essence of what he was trying to say was use the freshest shad you possibly can. I put some throw lines out with soap and other things just to augment my strategy. I rely on the soap to fish for me while I'm asleep in my tent Soap is an extremely slow bait but the good thing about it is that nothing but cats (albeit channels mostly) will bite on it.

Yep, I used to use it all the time on trot lines on Lake Amistad. It needs to be fresh, that is soft, kinda like velveeta cheese sort of, Just squeeze it a little before you buy it to see if it is still soft. Then you can cut it into cubes of 1/2 inch or so , stick it on the treble hook and work into a ball or until it's pretty well attached to the hooks. I like to spread a little soured milo benath the line to draw them in. The brand is ZOTE and the color I used was pink or ROSA on the package

Ok, here is my final post for Zote Soap.
Zote soap is a great Catfish bait because of the fats that are in it. It leaves a trail that Catfish will follow.
I have melted it down before and added a small amount of bacon grease, and Garlic to it, then poured into a container of my choice to let harden back up.
This bait does not work well at all on rod and reel because of the slow bite. It does however work great on trot lines. As I mentioned, it's a slow bite bait.
This is the only bait I use on my trot lines as it only attracts catfish. Of course that's what I'm after anyways.. Now don't expect to haul in the Big Boys with this bait, as they prefer Cut bait, or live bait.
Now if your after some good sized eaters then this bait will work for you. It certainly does for me. Just remember that not ALL baits, work everywhere.
Ivory soap also works but it's very hard and crumble's easily.
One thing about using soap is, it's clean, and cheap.
If your having problems with Gar, or Turtles with other baits, then using soap will solve your problem.
