The grass is great if it is not allowed to take over the lake. A few months ago several of the boat ramps on the north end were no longer useable due to the massive amounts of grass. This has been either killed off or eaten by carp and I do not know of any ramp out of service on the northern end of the lake.
Why are there so many small bass and few large bass in the lake? I do not know anyone that keeps bass for eating in Lake Conroe; they usually go after the abundant supply of catfish and crappie when they want eaters.

honestly i agree with diving cat..the lake has such a great population of catfish whites hybrids and crappie that the bass never get ate..also not many people want to eat a 16" bass they want one that is 14 barely and smaller which is not possible due to size restrictions...it most likely wouldn't hurt the lake to take a few fish out...it honestly probably wouldn't hurt and it would be a good idea to try to obtain a permit somehow through tpwd for a tournament that is a 12" to say 16" limit with the fish being donated to any type of charities or anything like that if you all get my drift...as for the grass carp and the grass go i understand where the homeoweners are coming from but there is also the fact like kingwood stated..when the grass is gone there is very few fisherman around due to very few knowing how to catch bass on this lake...there has to be some negative impact on the community with less fisherman around even with acres and acres of pleasure boaters in the summer...honestly go to conroe in the spawn and tell me if the business's around the lake or not making money..i dont think so..gas prices alone for the 600 boats is astonishing now-days...ok well i have ranted and gave enough of my thoughts for now...thanks for the time guys for reading this...have a good one

I guess I must have missed what ramps were out of service this summer, both Scott's Ridge and Cagle were open as far as I could tell. TPWD and the Forestry Service need to decide in conjunction with the homeowners, how best to manage the lake. There needs to be some balance somewhere. I doubt any balance will occur due to the amount of $$ invested in real estate around the lake.

Kingwood, I second the summer time on Conroe, that has to be one of the most dangerous lakes in the state from Memorial Day on. Any buddy with enough cash to buy a power boat can, when they figure out how to back it up, put in and joy ride with no idea of the rules of the road.

I agree on the 16" limit, the day I caught 15, I had several that were between 14 and 16, good eatin', but they all went back.

See you guys on the water.

I was out on Lake Conroe last week, put in at Scotts Ridge when a fool came roaring in on the other side of the tree stumps from the middle of the lake. I waited to see if he was gonna hit one but he lucked out by the time he backed it off. Then once we started fishing Peach Creek stumps, 2 guys came by in those little jet boats and really upset the apple cart. Its dangerous even in the winter. Guess I'll have to get on up to the Stubblefield area to avoid all the crazies!

Chuck,
I like the fact that they run through those stumps wide open in boats and on jet skis. I guess they figure all that is there is what they can see. Gotta love it.
To all, have a great Thanksgiving.
See ya.

i have only been in texas 3 years so i dont know the fishing history on conroe. but those of you who use conroe as your home lake did you stick it out and continue to fish when the grass was gone or move on to another lake. what is your conroe replacement lake??

i would think if you cant find brush piles it would sure be easy to catch bass on your own brush pile. or any brush pile for that matter.

I can only faintly remember the lake when the grass was gone and I quit fishing it for that reason. I've never put a brush pile in a public lake before. Seems like it would be a lot of work to haul a brush pile to the lake, load it and then dump it. I guess a xmas tree would work just as well.

yeah fished conroe when grass was gone...i have placed a few (7 to be exact) brush piles in the lake but also know of maybe 20 more and a few rockpiles and a few roadbeds that held/hold fish...all my bigger conroe fish have came off brushpiles..have one brushpile that is the only cover on a huge 12' flat that has produced numerous 7 pound fish during the summer for me...found it white bass fishing on accident...thought i hooked the tree when i pulled the first 7 up off it 2 years ago...

I think when the fishing slowed on Conroe several years ago, many started going to Lake Livingston which is a few dozen miles east of Conroe.
When the lake was really being taken over by weeds, etc. the ramp at Lochness Marina was closed. Stow-Away keep theirs open by dragging the weeds away from the ramp each day.
Right after Christmas last year I saw a couple pontoon boats loaded with Christmas trees headed out to make some brush piles. The old railroad track holds a lot of fish on the north end along with the couple of old roadbeds. Also, there are several surmerged lakes that have dams that form great structure. I think the old Lake Betty dam is a great area for white bass and hybrids.

I spoke with a friend that lives on the lake today and he said the fishing has been great the past couple of days.

Caught 5 in an hour and a half last Friday, and 3 in two hours yesterday.

All fish were caught in 2-8 feet of water on jerk baits and june bug worms rigged texas style.

OQUINN
where did you fish and how was fishing in the cold? This rain and cold just makes me want to hunker down by the fireplace and watch fishin shows on TV. I will probably wait til Monday or so to get out and try my luck!
Thanks for the report.

Chuck,

We fished boat docks off of Atkins Creek. We found a cove that was protected from the wind and stuck close to the shoreline. It was actually pretty nice yesterday afternoon.

Today is a different story... I won't be venturing out today or tomorrow. I may go sit in a deer stand, but you won't find me on the water.
