I would NEVER consider running a champion plug in a mercury or a yamaha outboard.
just like i'd never run a ngk plug in an omc engine.

i change plugs once a season for no more than they cost. you can get a good TR at sears for less than 100.00. NEVER CLEAN SPARK PLUGS. its one of those things like when you pull your lower unit off, don't inspect your impeller, just go ahead and change it. don't inspect plugs, just change them.

your spark plugs can clue you in as to what's going on inside your engine...google "reading spark plugs" sometime for some interesting reading.

I change them about once a year. Usually it is after what a buddy of mine calls a "shock treatment" of running a tank of gas that has a couple cans of Seafoam through it. It cleans the crud out of the entire engine but fouls the plugs.

NGK's in all my 3.0 Mercs, period. Champions are just junk.
