There's a Leroy Thompson that's a game warden out at Lake Lavon. He's a real nice guy too.

Been checked many times, even got a ticket for bad life jacket (125.00) frown but never has a Game Warden given me any grief or attitude. I use to think that being a Game Warden would be cool but considering that too many people they have to deal with have guns and are out in remote areas the job is just too dangerous.

May be the same guy...I'm not sure what his last name was...

Talked to Officer Leroy at Lavon yesterday. I asked him where the fish were biting. He grined and told me, "Can't tell you that...that's why they call it fishing."
Classic good guy.

He leadeth me beside still waters.

I was checked by a couple of game wardens a couple of years ago on Richland Chambers. The were checking people fishing under the bridge one night. One was about 50 and his partner was a young drop dead gorgeous blond. Interesting! Anyway, they were both very courteous and professional. Everything was legal and they wished us a good evening of fishing.

I used to fish on Lake Pinkston in Shelby county a lot. One game warden lived next door to the lake and he was a good fellow, courteous and professional. Then they brought this new game warden in, a young kid who was just a punk. He'd check me every Saturday as well as every boat on the lake, without fail. He even got so that when he'd approach he'd call me by name. He'd act courteous and all while checking everything, which was always legal and proper in my small boat. All fish I ever kept were legal. Never got in trouble for anything. But, here is the kicker. The little jerk would then motor off without checking the fishing license only to turn around 20 feet away and motor back with a [censored] eating grin on his smug face and say in a cheesy sounding voice, "ohhhhhhhhh I need to see your license". The first time you'd think it was an honest mistake. But after the fourth and fifth time you realize that he's just a jerk that likes to play little cat and mouse games with folks and trying to show his "authority". I mean it actually got comical after about a dozen times, especially after he could remember my name and everything about me! LOL What was really funny about it was sometimes you could see the embarrassment on the faces of the different partners that were with him from time to time. It was like you could almost hear them thinking, "I hope he doesn't think I'm like this idiot".

But thankfully I can say that all the others I've had dealings with were good, decent, professional and courteous people just doing their jobs.

I am a traveler and end up fishing a new state every 13 to 26 weeks. I have Texas tags on my truck....but Alabama numbers on the boat (since that's where I bought it). I have been checked only in 3 different states in the last 4 years. Tenn., Fla., and NY. I thought that having out of state numbers on the boat would be a red flag saying "I don't live in this state, come check me out to see if I have your non-resident license". Each warden that has checked me have commented on "your a ways from home arn't ya?" Would say yes while showing all the required asked for stuff, but every one was smiling professional and friendly. Was told by the county sheriff in NY that he normally don't stop out of state boats, cuz they are usally "up to snuff". He said the locals were the ones normally trying to get away with something. All in all, most are really good people. Some do have a bad day though, just like the rest of us.

Leroy is still alive and well in Brownwood. I have a hunting lease just west of there. We have a hat hanging in our cabin that says "I've been Leroyed." He got me about 4 years ago for mis-tagging a whitetail with a mule deer tag. He was very nice though and told me to contact a specific judge and explain what happened. The ticket was dismissed and I just had to pay court fees.

I was stopped one time on Colleto Creek reservoir. He just check to see that we had lifejackets in the canoe and licenses. My wife's fishing license was in the truck, about 600 yards across the marina. I offered to go get it, he just said to carry next, and let us go. Real nice guy.

Texas game wardens are alright as far as i can tell. I've heard some real nasty stuff about the ones in Arkansas though.
