I believe that having a manual safety that you train with won’t prevent you from disengaging it in your sleep. The weapon needs to be where you can’t access it in your sleep

Seriously, what percentage of us really have a need for a gun right there in our nightstand? If I did that, and I don’t have time to get a gun out of my closet, then I would be moving because that’s not the kind of neighborhood I want to live in! Bad things can happen in good neighborhoods. Even in the middle of nowhere. My inlaws had an incident last year. A police chase, guy wrecked out near the inlaws house in the country. A place you're not going to find real easily. Dude bailed on foot. Ended up a the inlaws. Busted through the kitchen door and grab a set of keys. Before he could go anywhere in the car he was about to steal my BIL had a gun on him. One cop arrived shortly after. Had my BIL keep dude at gunpoint until more back up could arrive. It's short sighted to think that you're 100% safe because you live in a "good" neighborhood. We live in an unhinged society where anything can pop off without notice. I agree with a few comments I read earlier. The right dog or dogs will buy you those valued seconds when needed. . Intell my German Shepherd all the time. Her job is to slow them down enough so I can do my job. In general a GSD, Malinois, Rottweiler, Pit Bull, dogs like that. Are already invader deterrents. A burglar is less likely to break in if they run the risk of getting their face eaten. Chihuahuas are going to get kicked across the room. They ain't going to do that to a dog that weighs 80+ pounds that have a ferocious bite.

Do you take sleep aids some cause some strange stuff I would probably just put it in a drawer or maybe move it to a dresser so you have to get up to get to it. I wondered this too. I’ve heard of people having bizarre stuff happen when taking Ambien. The first few years maybe so but now it is just drifting into sweet bliss.
Advice? Wise men don't need it. Fools won't heed it !

Get a fingerprint activated gun locker that mounts near your bed - on the wall, on the bedframe, etc. It's possible that you could open it in your sleep, but much less likely than just picking the gun up from the nightstand.
I have one of these because I have a hyper 11 year old, and my wife is on some pretty powerful psychiatric meds which sometimes have odd side effects. So I can't risk a situation like you described.

As you know I am a pharmacist, I had a customer receive a call in the middle of the night from his MIL.( 84 years old ) She was in her car and did not know where she was or how she got there. If I remember correctly she had driven 60 miles from home. She was on ambien. Very scary situation. Most folks are unaware of how dangerous this drug can be , but it is still widely prescribed.
be careful out there
MO I didn’t know you were a pharmacist. Good to know.

I'm in agreement with a few others... If you live in a neighborhood where you need a gun on your night table it's a big fat hint, it's time to move... All my guns are locked in a safe in the closet... The dog will give me all the heads up I need... Dan

It’s either put on pants or grab a gun but it can’t be both when you are in a hurry.

If someone is crazy enough to come into our house unbidden I am guessing they will change their mind when the Great Pyrenees rears up on his hind legs and looks them in the eye. The shepherds will be gnawing on their legs and groin. The 185 grain, .45s will either end it or we'll wait for the police to show up from 35 miles away, unless there is an SO unit closed.
edit: The slobber from the Great Pyrenees will either drown them or slime them like in Ghost Busters. Which is kinda cool since his name is Geist, which is German for ghost.
