I only managed peritoneal dialysis and no one particularly uncomfortable while the fluid was indwelling. In most cases we used a machine that once programmed instilled the fluid and removed it at the prescribed time .this was an overnight thing so mobility was not an issue. There of course can be manual gravity fiill and drain. . One issue not related to health is travel as if you go anywhere you will need to find a center to do it which is quite a burden. The indwelling port is titanium.

Continued prayers for you Steve!! If it were me, I’d prefer to be at home. However, I’d definitely continue to consult with your medical professionals and do what’s best. Same thoughts from me. But I would have to see what that "at home" thing is like.

I am no doctor, but if you do at home dialysis, you could get some good whiskey or bourbon and just replace all your blood with that. Then you don't have to worry about sobering up. Not sure if you will have a hangover though.

I still look forward to having lunch with you and your wife, I need to make it to one of the TFF luncheons. Alas, I am still having some issues, but they will get better, and I will make this happen.
Your good friend.

This will just be another small speedbump in your recovery, my friend. I know you and your family will make the best decision for you!

You have to do what is right for you and in my case The Forsenius Center is what was right now that I see it. I was intent on the other way because I didn't like crowds and Hospitals. After seeing and doing the process I have no regrets. Doing Dialysis at home was my choice in the beginning but when that failed and I used the Center I discovered all my fears were unwarranted. I drive myself or the wife takes me and picks me up. If needed there are free rides to the center and they are set up for handicapped riders. There are a few at the center missing limbs and they do just fine. I am there 10 to 11 hours a week and done with weekends off. This frees up my wife who is retired even though she was ready to go the other way. Actually less time than most people volunteer for work or partime jobs. The people of all ages are friendly. I don't think there is a better situation for me. After reviewing my options I felt even better not having to have a dedicated room and being hooked to a machine for longer periods. That may be the better situation for you but only you can know that. I have a Cousin who has now passed away after 12 years on Peritoneal Dialysis and it was the best choice for him. His death had nothing to do with the Dialysis as our family has a strong propensity to heart disease. Just shows that when you make whatever choice there is no wrong way. Spend lots of time questioning your Nephrologist. Good luck and many prayers for you and the family.

Evidently the time has come for me to learn about kidney dialysis- My kidneys have went joe Biden on me it seems- I am able to decide if want home dialysis or go to a center 3 times a week-
I have a lot more to understand yet but i think its like if I choose at home it takes longer but the upside is i will be at home- At a dialysis center I would be on the machine less time but it takes more energy from you-
I have always been able to get good information from the OT, always- Im hoping this question will be no different-
The journey continues, a lot of you have been on this ride with me early on, so I’m not gonna hide anything now-
You tough ole SOB (if I can say that) this is nothing more than a step for a stepper. I’ll be praying for you my friend🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼‼️ I apologize for SOB and prayer in the same sentence.

RayBob did a great job of explaining the differences. PD was an easy choice for me since we live 40 miles from the dialysis clinic in Brownwood. I self treat 7 nites a week and it takes just over 9 hours. I sleep intermittantly during the treatments. I have been on the program for 5 months and still have trips to the clinic for lab blood draws and visits with the Physician in charge who is a female Nephrologist in the Hendrick System. My wife went through the training with me but actually she is not involved in my treatments. At least she knows what to do if there is a problem. Last week I went to fish Amistad with friends and one of them has a house where we stay. I packed up my machine-its called a cycler- and set it up in one of the bedrooms for nightly treatments. After fishing we freshened up and went to dinner and got back before it got too late so I could get hooked up and start my treatment. Finished at 5 AM as the coffee pot came on. Its a pain and monotinous repetition but it is better than the option of not surviving!

I've been on PD since May. I'm fairly young at 54 and I didn't want the fistula in.my arm, limiting my physical activities. So I chose PD. The surgery was absolutely painless. The training was good however you will need two support people to train with you. I have my machine in our spare room and it's close enough that I can put my drain bag in the shower, because in the morning it's going to be very heavy. Once I hook up, I can still move about the house and go in the kitchen and living room. In the morning when I unhook, I can go about my day as normal. Nobody knows that I'm on dialysis unless I tell them. For me PD was a no brainer. Just my experience.

Also, you'll need to make a space for your supplies. Baxter, the delivery company will call you and prompt you to place your order when it's time. They will also give you your delivery date and time. Travel can be a hassle because you'll have to take your machine and solutions, however it can be done.

My clinic in Brownwood stopped using Baxter because of some concerns. I used the Baxter Amia cycler for 3 months and loved the long patient line in case of a gastric attack and the need for a trip to the bathroom. The Frecentius cycler patient line is only 10 feet long! Otherwise the cycler works fine although it is bigger to travel with!
