Evidently the time has come for me to learn about kidney dialysis-
My kidneys have went joe Biden on me it seems-
I am able to decide if want home dialysis or go to a center 3 times a week-

I have a lot more to understand yet but i think its like if I choose at home it takes longer but the upside is i will be at home-
At a dialysis center I would be on the machine less time but it takes more energy from you-

I have always been able to get good information from the OT, always-
Im hoping this question will be no different-

The journey continues, a lot of you have been on this ride with me early on, so I’m not gonna hide anything now-

Man, I don't have any experience with this. I'll pray for you, though! Not sure if you're eligible for a new kidney or not, but I'll pray for that, too! I've got several transplant recipients as clients, a few with kidneys and they are doing great with those.

Prayers for you brother!

I've heard good things about home dialysis, but you'll be required to get more check ups as they won't see you in the center. Training and keeping the equipment clean and operational is key.

If you have a great support system that can aid in the home dialysis, this would be my choice.

Good friend of mine has a wife with home dialysis. She's been on it close to 8 years.

Thank you LSS, dont know about the transplant thing yet, that sepsis did a number on most of my organs so I may not be a good for a transplant-
I’m meeting with another specialist next week and i may not have the choices I think I have now-
Just wanted some real life experiences to give me some insight to that world-

Thank you, I didn’t ask specifically but this is one huge question I had, how long are people able to live on dialysis-

Continued prayers for you Steve!! If it were me, I’d prefer to be at home. However, I’d definitely continue to consult with your medical professionals and do what’s best.

Yes, that would be the only logical explanation.

2 different critters.

Home dialysis is indwelling peritoneal. A port (tube) into the abdomen (placed surgically) where you'll introduce a hypertonic solution that will sit inside the body and draw extra fluid and waste products that the kidneys usually excrete into that fluid and after several hours (4-6?) you'll drain that fluid. Highest risks I'd think would be introducing infection into the abdomen.

Hemodialysis - go to a center where a nurse will access either a semi permanent IV line in the arm, chest, neck and pull blood thru an external machine where it'll be filtered for waste and extra fluid. The optimal goal is to build and IV shunt or bridge in your arm, using your own blood vessels , where blood will pass from the artery to a vein through a large blood vessel and this will be used later as the semi-permanent IV line will be removed. Biggest complications are the vascular shunt clotting off and failing. And also infection as the vascular system is accessed (3 times weekly) and excellent technique required by the healthcare nurse. Also the machine can be a source of infection. Hemodialysis requires about 3 hours. IMO it does a better job but that is a question best answered by your nephrologist.

Advice? Wise men don't need it. Fools won't heed it !

If it were me travel time & distance to the treatment center would be a big consideration.

You probably have a better chance of hot nurses at the dialysis center.

Great explanation-
My wife wants to make a spare bedroom into a treatment room we can keep sanitary, and I trust her more than a stranger-
As far as the hemodialysis or peritoneal the specialist i see next week will help me decide whats the best plan of action there-

Strong point there. A lot of young and newer nurses start out there because stress levels are less. But, there will be one old battle axe iron drawers overseeing the younguns.
