Could be the merchant ship hit them? It's not like either can change directions or stop quickly.

So it's that easy to take out one of our carriers? I thought nothing was allowed close to those things. Dress up a "merchant" ship with a bunch of explosives and just bump it on in there, sounds reasonable. USS COLE?

I don't know the details but guessing the approach to canals or ports are hard to avoid other ships being close. Just guessing. I'll ask one of my guys when he gets back in, he rode around on ships for 26 yrs.

Just add about 2 dozen of those crappie brakes and they will be fine.

So, the anchorage was pretty congested with ships queing up for the southern transit through the canal. US Warships are typically given priorithy in the que, and the HT apparently manuvering through this congested area to postion itself at the head of the que to prepare to go through. AIS was off (which is the norm, but they are supposed to turn it on when around large amounts of civilian traffic from what I understand). Anyway, HT preparing to head in the MV was coming NB out of the canal and turning NW which is pretty common. As to why they wound up hitting, it appears we don't know that yet.

Hate to see a military career end under those circumstances, but as the ships commanding officer he is ultimately responsible. I'm sure many others responsible for the ships navigation will be disciplined as well.
