Childhood ritual was checking the coin return basin on every phone I passed. I forgot about that….

I was stubborn and refused to get a cell phone until….well, I’ve never bought one as I can’t stand being tethered to electrical devices. My wife bought me my first cell phone in 2002 as she got tired of me having to drive sometimes three miles or so to find a pay phone if someone paged me; etc. I enjoyed the process of having to drive around to find a pay phone….it was like an adventure.

I used them all the time even when they cost a dime. I used to travel for work for many decades. The airports used to have banks of pay phones that people used. And when a flight unloaded the passengers would almost run down the jetway to get to a phone, and every one of them would be taken. Nowday, everybody has a phone stuck to their ear when they land.

I asked the girls in the office... ages 19 and 21.... one asked if those were the ones with the round dial... lol

In the 70's I had to carry a bag of quarters in my work truck and as I traveled around town would have to stop at different pay phones to call customers to let them know I was on my way or to call the office. I remember how great it was when we finally got two way radio's.

Parents bought me prepaid cards before cell phones. I remember asking who had used a typewriter when interviewing 15 years ago. Most said no. We used to pop form in the tpewriter, easy peasy. Now we scan our forms, edit them in adobe and print them out, sign and re-scan....because you know.....technological improvements.

There's one in front of a BBQ joint by my office. It has never worked in over 30 years. The receiver cord is separated from the phone. Still, every now and then, some homeless person will pick up the receiver, dial a number, and commence to give someone (in their head) absolute hell.

Lot's of Looper's have this waypointed so they can take a picture of it. It is just a booth with no working telephone.

Oh yeah... I can remember feeding the pay phones nickles, dimes and quarters calling my girlfriend (now wife) during my college days... Running short and having to run up and down the hall at the dorm yelling I need 50 cents... Last time we were in London they still had pay phones, 8, 9 years ago... And when we drove through Cades Cove in the Smokey's last week we stopped at a primitive campground they had a "pay phone" like phone for emergencies... Dan

Yep. Used to have a “calling card” too, saved a lot of money. I had to dial my calling card number, then “0”, then the number I was calling. Real PITA. Had beepers too….before pagers. This thing just beeped. And I’d do the whole calling card thing, then the beeper service number where the girl answering the phone would give me any personal messages. I knew her by name. She sounded SOOOO beautiful over the phone. (<<<<<I WAS SOOO WRONG!!!!) Yeah, I had a card too. It was for emergencies only to reach my parents. Anyone remember these: Party lines 3 way calling Long distance based on country
