Never had good luck with 55gr, but 64gr is the sweetspot on my AR.

Never had good luck with 55gr, but 64gr is the sweetspot on my AR. That’s is where I’m going next. I think I can get closer with a heavier round. Thanks for the input. I’m learning as I go. If I could shoot with people who know what they are doing it would help me gauge what is good or not.

US Marine Corps rifleman qualifying is at 500 yards (then 300 and 200) with their off the rack M16's. read it hereThe 5.56 is not a sniper round fo sho but is capable out to 600 yards. When I was in, we qualified on the 200/300/500 yard range with the M16A2. We also practiced shooting point targets at 800 yards (man sized silhouette target).

Thank you. Now I’m in deep water though. That ammo is expensive. I guess you have to pay to play though.

5 cent per round discount on the 500 rounds. You could get a couple boxes of 20 to see if you like it. That’s about the going rate per round for match ammo. https://www.sgammo.com/product/223-...atch-hornady-frontier-ammo-made-lake-citThe worst ammo I have shot was some of that Russian Wolf 9MM. I brought a few boxes back when ammo was hard to find and expensive. One day I was shooting worse than ever. I will have a day here and there where I seem off. This was bad. I loaded some normal range ammo then the group was better at 20 yards. It’s some dirty ammo too. I still have a few boxes. Most the the pistol shooting I do is at 7, 10 or 15 yards. Just keep used to that range for personal protection.

Marine annual rifle qualification scoring
storyFify In my mind there is a difference between target shooting and tactical shooting. I’m not going to pretend I’m an operator. I am a fat, middle aged white guy and will not be engaging a target that is shooting back at me. Props for those who are.. I think I can hit the kill zone on most of those targets most of the time. I think I shot pretty bad today from sand bags in a controlled environment but even with the fliers, I was within an a 8 inch group. I’d like to get within a 2 inch or less group at 200 yards. That is still not elite but better than what I am doing now. I don’t think I am shooting a rifle or the right ammo to do that yet, but I think I will get there. My issue is I don’t shoot enough with other people to know what good really looks like. I don’t think I’m good at this distance and would like to see what a good shooter can do under the same conditions I hate those flyers. I will set a group goal for a certain range. It seems if I shoot 15 rounds there always has to be one maybe two flyers to ruin it. I can shoot a pretty decent grouping. From those I see shooting around me I am better than average. There are some really good shooters out there. Maybe about 10% of them at the range I go to Range USA. I am sure that there are ranges where those who are heavily into it go.

I worked on my 200 yard shooting again today. I bought a better scope which helped and found some 72 grain ammo. Still work to be done but it’s getting better. Can you tell when the wind pocked up a bit? ![[Linked Image]](https://texasfishingforum.com/forums/pics/userpics/2024/10/full-20730-246805-img_3093.jpeg)

Maybe I should take a step up to a .308? This. There is a world of difference between my 5.56 with a varmint barrel and my .308 Weatherby bolt. I have my ARs set up One with a red dot for up to 50 yds. and the other with a good scope out to 100 yds. Just my thinking.
