I never have and never will use a hot foot And that's your right to do so. I’ve been living the tiller life lately, direct connection, no water bottles getting stuck to my yankee hand I bet tillers have killed more people than hot foots.

Hot foot is a option , most people didn't learn with a hot foot . They are good at 70 mph , keep your hands on the wheel

I never have and never will use a hot foot And that's your right to do so. I’ve been living the tiller life lately, direct connection, no water bottles getting stuck to my yankee hand I bet tillers have killed more people than hot foots. Rules of tiller operation. Rule number one, hold onto the tiller handle. Rule number two, attach kill switch to wrist. Rule number three, wear a life vest. You’re right, I knew a guy that got killed on a tiller, but he broke those three rules, all of them. he reached for something sliding around in the boat and got knocked out and ejected, sad, he was a very experienced guide that knew better, just got too comfortable and complacent. Now the big tillers with power steering that lock up, they’re quite safe. One day I’ll go with the 250 tiller But there are no springs getting stuck or trash getting in the way with either a tiller or a normal hand throttle, I’ve never had a “oh [censored]” pull the kill switch before I get ejected moment with either, have you? I used to parachute for work a lot, and we would go through emergency procedures, how do you all train for hotfoot failure?

I wondered how those big 250 tillers worked- seemed dangerous but cool at the same time.😆 Do they trim out?

I learned on a hand throttle, went to a hot foot, and now back on the hand throttle. It is a preference thing for me.

I wondered how those big 250 tillers worked- seemed dangerous but cool at the same time.😆 Do they trim out? Warrior boats makes a tiller boat they put a 250 on. They developed a hydraulic system that is actually quite safe. When it’s on it “locks” the motor in place. You have your left hand on the tiller/throttle but all of the steering and trimming is done on switches that are mounted on the starboard gunnel that you control with your right hand. When you are idling around, you just use the tiller like normal. It’s probably one of the safer ways to drive a boat. Merc also has up to a 300 tiller on their power steering system, I’m not sure if it hydraulic but similar concept I believe The trim and steering is on the handle though. They lock up while running, you can run them for a moment without your hand on the tiller and be ok.

Hot foot is a option , most people didn't learn with a hot foot . They are good at 70 mph , keep your hands on the wheel I learned on a “hot foot” back in 1976. Jet boats didn’t have hand throttles. It was worse than an outboard, let off the gas on a jet boat and it doesn’t turn. Haha.

Here is the full/whole/truthful story....
A college team fished the college event on Rayburn. On the second day, one of the kid's dad (who owns the boat) wanted to see how the new intake on the boat performed. The dad and the college kid's brother (also boat owners son) jumped in the boat to take it for a spin. When they were coming in, the spring on the hot foot broke and he had to swerve to avoid hitting other boat(s). When he did, the boat hooked and threw them out. It then went up on the bank hitting that pile. The dad has a broken leg and was Life Flighted from the pavilion. His son, who was in the boat with him, was taken by ambulance to a local hospital where the stayed overnight to be checked out. He was just banged up.
It was a Bullet 21XRS with a 250 Merc on it. It obviously had a modified intake on it so I would assume it probably had modifications to the lower unit, prop, etc.
It was something that could have happened to any of us but a lot of us old dudes wouldn't be going WOT in such a speed boat and the consequences wouldn't be quite so extreme.

Thank you Outlaw Outdoors, amazing how so many tell the story like they knew it completely and then to find out that wasn’t the real story after all.

Extremely crowded water lots of boaters around and he is gonna take it out and let er rip trimmed out to “test the new intake”..😆
