From what I read on BBC about the OP wreck, they crossed a wake and bow hooked. Not real hard to do, if you aren’t paying attention.
I bow hooked my old skeeter once, it’ll get your attention.

I never have and never will use a hot foot thanks for sharing Just sharing a safety tip! Confused? There were several who said there are water bottles stuck in their hot foot, the spring is messed up, blah blah blah, can’t remember a water bottle getting stuck on a regular hand shifter/throttle. From what I can tell the pros of a hot foot do not outweigh the cons.

what does "bow hooked" mean? Let’s say your on plane at WOT and hit a wake, the bow comes down into the water and bites. When it bites it can spin you. I’ll find a video. These guys claimed that something on the motor broke, but if you look closely they had just hit a wake. Thank you.

HookaToad, another way to think of it. Say you have your hand out the window while driving at speed. Your hand is pointed straight into the wind and if you angle it just a little bit, the wind catches it and pushes it sideways. Same principle with bow in the water.
Hopefully that makes sense. Some boats are more prone to hooking.

One last question.
IF this was indeed college kids.
Whose parents think it’s a good idea to put their college aged kid in a bullet with a merc racing engine. I’m not saying it’s to blame, but the optics around that look horrible.

Not college kids, father and son. The kids in the pic stopped to help. That’s coming from another forum and it sounds legit.

They said it was a father and son pre-fishing for the tournament... As said before, some boats are more apt to bow hook than others... Bullet isn't one of them... Dan

Hopefully that makes sense. Some boats are more prone to hooking. Yes it does. Makes perfect sense... I imagine it is a lot like skateboarding down a hill when one wheel hits a small rock and you get thrown forward.. I have never really been comfortable going over other boat wakes like that and the feeling is magnified if I am only the passenger..

Sounds like he might have been in traffic and pulling a KIll switch, or turning ignition off, takes a second. Instinct will take over, Hard to say what else they could have done. Speed appears to be a factor. Just by seeing where the boat ended up.
Every hot foot has a a way to lift by your foot, the spring alone is nice....but just pull your leg up and it will lift.
I had a throttle cable come loose at Cassel Boykins during the week and I was idling too fast to the dock. the throttle did not respond to me pulling back on the hot foot, i tried to put in in neutral but could not, and I just turned the key off. Course the boat stopped turning when i did that. but that few seconds to do this, made me hit the dock pretty hard. Thankfully i was the only one at the dock. this was about 10 years ago and a lesson learned, just slow down and leave room for errors.
