Drive straight through downtown after 8pm or in between the high traffic times.
Don't all the new gps mapping show traffic? They should show the best way at different times. We were driving to Milwaukee and as we approached the city our mapping asked if we wanted to change course because of traffic.

Best option. I'd probably go 35 down to San Antonio, then pick up 37 to Corpus so I could turn back and hit Galveston from the south.
That would bypass Houston altogether and only add a few extra hundred miles. Second best option. Make sure you are strapped and lock and load the AR and have the better half manning shotgun position. Mandatory with any option.

straight down 45, time it so that you hit houston about 6 pm.
shortest bestest route.
houston never shuts down, traffic sucks no matter what time of day but while it is dinner time it gets a bit better.
and I would for sure have a pistol very handy.

None of the routes to avoid downtown are any better in terms of traffic or construction. Keep in on 45 all the way down. What you don't want to do is be anywhere close to downtown Houston from about 4-6PM on a weekday. So if you get to Conroe after about 2:30PM then just find a shady spot to relax for a few hours.
On a weekend the traffic is going to be pretty steady throughout the whole day. Just stay relaxed and don't get in a rush. And remember a blinker in Houston in an invitation for the cars in adjacent lanes to speed up and cut you off. In order to change lanes in Houston, hit the gas pedal and push yourself in. About half way into the lane, you can then put you blinker on as a means of either saying thanks, or shooting the finger.

If you have to go during the week just time it so that you are going thru downtown around 10:00 am and straight thru 45

The easiest? Are you ok driving later at night?
If a week day... Leave OKC around 9:00 AM. Gets you south of Dallas around 1:30 - 2:00. You are somewhere south of Madisonville for rush hour.
Aim to be in Conroe for dinner - 5:00-6:00 PM. Hang out there until 9:00 PM. You are 90 miles from Galveston via I-45. Easily in before midnight and traffic is a breeze
Stay strapped.

smoothest and least traffic would be 99E assuming you want to pull your rig over the ship channel bridge.

Here’s the Houston traffic map: Houston TranStar MapIt’s handy and will give you live traffic updates. I’d take a look at it when you get closer to town, ie Conroe. As others have said, 45 is the direct route. We live in Sugar Land and avoid the drive on 45 thru downtown. If we are coming or going north out of Houston we will take the Grand Parkway (Hwy 99) toll road. Heading south on 45, you pick it up at Spring. It ends at 59 which is close to our house. If there’s not an accident, it moves 65-70+. Depending on the time of day, it will slow at Katy (south of I-10) until the toll road picks back up up at 1093. Take 59 north to the Sam Houston toll road (Beltway 8) east to 45 South. It would be quite a bit out of the way. A much shorter way is taking Beltway 8 east where it intersects 45. However, that’s the route to Bush airport and can be a challenge. An alternate route would be to take Hwy 99 toll road east at Spring to Hwy 59 and then south to Beltway 8 to the east. Around BW8 east to 45 south. A little out of the way but not too much. If you want to avoid downtown, this would be the best route. Depending on traffic, of course. FYI, Beltway 8 is under construction at the ship channel. It’s two lanes each way. We took it last week with no problems. Good luck. Jimmy

I’m driving in Houston almost every other week. It might seem brutal but it’s better than 20 years ago. Pulling a big trailer I’d get on the new 99 and take it south to 146 to Texas City. 45 is a dice roll at any time. ![[Linked Image]](https://i.ibb.co/X4hyTD6/Houston-turn-signal.jpg)

Just stay out of 5:30 am to 9am or 3 pm to 7 pm.
Should be no problem.
