Born in Georgia.

Brunswick stew is heaven sent…although it is difficult, if not impossible, to find it made right.

Agreed. The real stuff would be nigh impossible to find, had squirrel in it, etc.

My Grandmother (born 1904):

and he and his sons made this on the farm at their once a month community barbecues (Social Circle, Ga). She described it as heaven sent, on and on. Of course I asked how you made it on and on and she said there wasn't any need - "Castleberry is spot on" she said.

So there you have it from what I consider an expert. Just get a can of Castleberry.

In my grade school days, schools would have Brunswick stews as a fundraiser for school activities.

Dads would stays up all night cooking the stew in those large cast iron pots in which lye soap was made.

I always thought there was a secret ingredient nobody ever talked about.

Our neighbor growing up would give us some every year around thanksgiving I think. We all enjoyed it, even my mom. My dad was the only one who knew it had squirrel in it. He didn’t tell anyone until that neighbor moved away and stopped bringing it. My mom was livid.

Honestly, I haven’t had it much in the past with butter or Lima beans.

Cooked bacon added. Thick sauce butter beans boiled until they're proper soft. With butter on top.

Scrape it off to my plate.

Southern Soul BBQ is supposedly the best Brunswick stew in the state. I just copied their recipe

Georgia native myself. Was raised eating brunswick stew. My grandmother made it & then my dad made it after she passed. I judge all by theirs...some get close some don't.
