So a little more background.
I'm tight, squeaky tight. Also retired and fixed income.
I've come across a 2022 5.0 about $5K off window sticker. New truck. I've been looking for about a month and had about decided I wanted a 3.5 eco-boost.
I've always owned GM ( have a 2007 Sierra 1500) and Toyota (1998 Toyota Tacoma 4x4). Gonna step off to the Ford Dark Side. If you’re “tight” aka smart with your money- get the Tundra. Lower cost of ownership than the Ford by far. Until you put gas in it. Worst fuel mileage. I had 4 F150 Suoercrew. 150K+ on all them. About $1,000 major issues averaged across them. Change oil every 10,000. Low ownership cost. My SonIL has a tundra Hybrid together with the turbo V6 it does well on gas mileage.

Ya’ll concerned about gas mileage towing a boat?? I’ve had 2 Ecoboost and the 5.0 V8. I like d the sound of my V8 but the responsiveness of my Eco is unmistakeable. The 10 speed tranny is pretty awesome too. Shifts through all 10 without a blip.
LET’S GO BRANDON!!!

The tundra is a new design. Not sure about bugs in it. I have 3 Toyotas now so I am not an anti-Toy guy.

After owning a car dealership, I can say we have had much more issues with the 3.5 over the 5.0. Across the gas engines of 5.0, 5.3, 3.5, 6.2 and 5.7, the GM 5.3 seems to have the least issues for us from a large sample.

We have a fleet of 30 of them, over half have had valvetrain issues by 50k miles requiring significant downtime.

You can hear them ticking.

I talked to a mechanic that told me the thinner oil ran through the engine helping to dissipate the heat which lessened wear and was needed also because of the tighter tolerances in modern engines.

Test drive them both- get what you want, pay attention to payload- most loaded out crew cabs have low payload numbers. Throw 2 people in the cab, junk in the bed and you’d be over payload pulling a 7500 tractor on a trailer- that’s a 10k total load so 1500lb tongue weight, most of the trucks that’s the total payload. +1, just because a truck can tow 14,000 does not mean you should. Some people just look at the tow rating and not payload. If I was going to tow 7500 lbs or more I would go with a 3/4 or 1 ton. The other thing to consider is the type of trailer and wind resistance. My FIL had a pontoon boat and that thing was like towing a sail.

3.5L Ecobeast hands down for me...before I bought my 2016 Eco I test drove all flavors of the F150. The power / torque these little turbo engines have is amazing. I have a 2016 w/ 85K miles on it. I do the regular maintenance from the dealer, tow my boat weekly, used it pull a 25' travel trailer until we sold it, and pull around our utility trailer with 2K loads every spring during our property clean up.
My average gas mileage is: 15.6 When I tow: 13-14 depending on speed
I have a 2.5" lift, 22" wheels, 33" tires.
It doesn't search for gears unless I'm pushing it hard on speed going uphill. If I keep it around 55-60 it will cruise up hill no issues.

2022 F-150 Powerboost 3.5L Hybrid, 435 hp, 575 lbs-ft. 4x4 for me. Power and fuel economy all rolled into 1. I have only towed my Tracker bass boat but it pulled it around like it wasn't even there.

Insider secret. Every single truck is unique. It's the options added or deleted. Trim level. Custom, XL, XLT, Platinum.
The reason is so you can't compare an apple to an apple.
The truck you want has the price listed on the window. It's the price you'll pay if you want it. With you being welcomed to order a custom option package. Again, the price will depend on what you want.
Just know, the dealer is the casino and the house always wins.
