Pretty selfish IMHO if you're asking lots of folks to go. My best friend in college asked me to go to jamaica for his destination wedding right after we got out of school. Was gonna cost $2k at a time when we were paying max every month on my wife's student loans ($24k that we paid off in about 1.5 years). So I didn't even really consider going. I can't tell my wife we can't afford to spend $50 at hobby lobby and then spend $2k on a vacation to a wedding that could be done at any church in east texas.
My SIL is going to her friends wedding in florida this year. Incredibly stupid - going to cost her about $4k-$5k for the weekend. It's ok to say no. I don't understand why folks feel obligated.
If you're like John and you're cool if nobody goes, then I think it's a cool idea. If you're asking people to spend that much money and time away from work just to go to your wedding, not cool.

Got married by a JP 22 years ago, no regrets from me or my wife, thankfully, she's not a Karen.

I look at destination weddings like a vacation for the wife and I, with one night of partying for the wedding. Drink at the pool if you want but I'd go fishing and golfing or something. There's all sorts of stuff to do down there, also look at other airfare or room options, I think you could do it for cheaper, unless that's an all-inclusive.

If you do go, treat it as a vacation. It really isnt that hard. edit: You can go to a wedding in the states and it cost just as much. Wife and i are going to my step sisters wedding in Charleston and between airfare and airbnb itll be close to 2k for 3 nights. We could easily say no and stay home, but decided we can do the beach a couple days and sight see.

Sounds like you aren't up to the challenge of trying to drink $900 worth of booze. The 18 year old Brandon I grew up with would have given it a go and then brought 2 extra to the ceremony. Hell, You were half drunk at your own wedding.

My parents would skip it if I had it in Mexico. Too old to climb that wall again?

I’m having to go to one in Cabo in March and am pizzed about it. My wife accepted and is making us go. I told her several years ago I would never go to another wedding that cost me 5k. I even told my daughters if they chose to have a destination wedding they had to pay for their grandparents and any other family they wanted to go. My deal with my girls has been a set amount I’m going to give them to get married and how they spent it would be their choice. They could have a nice little church wedding and save the rest or spend it all. But that was all they were going to get. It is a pretty large sum but if they choose to have a destination wedding they will spend it all just getting family there. This will be my last one. I don’t even like the kid getting married at the one we are going to!

We went to Ireland for my nieces wedding. I wish it only cost $3,000 😩. Really glad we went, it meant a lot to her.

You guys need to get out of DFW or whatever northern part of Texas you hang out in. It’s making y’all grumpy old women who think packing a bag and going to the Caribbean for a few days is punishment. Geez.

Family is everything! Life is precious. We don’t have forever. We have now. This moment. We can choose to love our lives now.
