I remember watching the first game he ever started in the majors. We only got to see maybe 5-10 games per season, usually on Sunday afternoons, on KTBS in Shreveport. They were part of the Astros network. J.R.'s start against the Giants was one of them.

I listened to the Astros on KWKH and the Rangers on either WBAP or KRLD, I don't remember which. Dave Nelson, Toby Harrah, Tom Grieve, Jeff Burroughs, Lenny Randle, Don Mincher, Pete Brogerg, Dick Bosman. Later the Rangers brought up Jim Sundberg and Mike Hargrove, but they still weren't very good. I guess some things never change. LOL.

The Astros were cursed. Don Wilson committed suicide. Cesar Cedeno was the greatest young superstar in baseball, but he got involved in the killing of a girl in the Dominican Republic and was never the same player. J.R. Richard had a stroke. They traded Joe Morgan, Denis Menke, and Jack Billingham to the Reds for Tommy Helms and Lee May. Lee was a good player, but he was no Joe Morgan. Helms couldn't hit his way out of a wet paper bag. They traded Rusty Staub to the Expos for Jesus Alou, the least of the Alou brothers.

It was tough being a fan of the Texas MLB teams back then.
