Sure there are people who will collect unemployment benefits as long as possible...nothing new there. The underlying symptom of low pay contributes to this attitude in my experience. I get it that employers want to pay a wage that ensures they are profitable and offer wages accordingly. And people can not accept those wages if they choose. But then we see the scenarios of people not showing up for work as they know they can find another low wage job if they get fired. It perpetuates a vicious cycle in the employment market which we are seeing today. I get the idea that minimum wage is or should be a starting point for many people. However given the costs of living today it is never going to meet those basic requirements. Sure there are ambitious people who will move up and improve their skills. But there are also people who will not for whatever reason. Lazy people or those people who lack ambition have been around since man walked upright and that will probably never change.

The other side of this employment coin is that every employer wants 20 years experience and only wants to pay $12.00 an hour for it with no insurance, etc. There are unrealistic expectations on the employer side as well. For $12 an hour I'll drive by your place, for $25 I'll talk to you and for $30 I'll show up and do the job...:)

For that 30.00 do you by chance have a CDL license ? If so then stop on by.

After years of reading your posts about the trials and tribulations of owning a restaurant, I wonder why in the world would anybody want to do that?

Rich government benefits. Moratorium on evictions. COVID making child care or onsite school difficult, so some parents choosing to stay home. COVID caused a bunch of boomers to retire all at one as opposed to risking getting it on the job, thus a bunch more open positions. General laziness. Jobs that pay decent wages and let you work from home. An entire generation trying to make money digitally. Onlyfans, YouTube, TikToK, Influencer, Podcaster, robin hood day trader, pretty much anything other than actual work. I don't know that this problem gets better anytime soon.

As our population grows the percentage needed to "do" stays the same or grows, yet the percentage of doers is shrinking fast.

Eventually the solution will be robots/AI/automation/ for a BUNCH of jobs (truck drivers, uber, manufacturing, cooks, servers, bank tellers, cashiers, realtors, etc...) Even teaching... Is a lecture on Youtube from the worlds best teacher better than an in-person session with an average teacher? Maybe so.

I say blame local parents vs some bonehead politician, but I agree with the lack of morals and pride in a hard days work. IMO Boomers should take some ownership in this issue. Too many grew up telling their kids that if you go to college you'll get a nice comfy office job that pays enough for you to own a large house.

When I think about growing up with no AC, a window fan was our AC, no phone in the house, when mom got remarried and I was adopted we moved into a house that had one phone on a big cord LOL. One phone and there were five children and two adults. We lived in a then HUGE 1800 square foot home with wha would be a tiny fridge today. I remember my senior year getting a microwave. It was huge and weighed a ton.

We had one TV and no cable, remember three channels LOL.

The way we live has changed dramatically over the last 50 years.

A great message from a "Texas Redneck".

It isn’t the unemployment checks that are keeping people from working, people don’t want low wage jobs. Due to the pandemic and the reduction in inventory, manufacturing is hiring with bonuses and benefits. These people are going to these jobs which include full benefits and in low COVID risk work areas.

We also don’t need all of these bars and restaurants in densely populated areas. Long before COVID, Dallas and other areas were suffering from an over abundance of hospitality businesses which caused a shortage of service workers.

Yes. Most fast food employees are being lured by the higher wages offered in the medical field. Due to COVID, there’s a shortage of doctors and RN’s.

It’s all just free market dynamics playing out.

People who want to work , are working, People who do not want to work, are not and didn't before. The ones that were in the middle...... don't have to anymore.

We had one call in this morning because their cellphone isn't working. I'm hoping she didn't call in from that same "broken" cellphone... This same person had a crying temper tantrum in the dealership last week because we got food for everyone (paid for by the company I might add), but we didn't ask for her input first on where we should order from. I was taught growing up that if someone else is buying for you, take what they give you and shut the hell up unless you're opening your mouth to say thank you.

It’s amazing the amount of jobs open. A buddy of mine tried to camouflage Biden’s “border policy” by saying so many more illegals are crossing the border because of all of the open jobs bang

It's a mixed bag of a lot of things that are keeping people home.
Some do not want to work for the same amount they would be getting by sitting at home.
Some people are inherently lazy and will never work a full time job.
Some people only want to start out as the CEO and not work their way up the ladder.
Some people will not work because it will increase their wages to move out from rent free housing and food stamps.
Some people will not work because selling drugs on the street is much more profitable to them.
Some people wont work because they cannot be told what to do, thus the "woken" crowd, don't tell me anything.
I am sure there are more reason than what I have listed but its the new American way the DemoRATS have produced and want.

I tried to tell HappyKamper this when he called be 4 or 5 years ago. He didnt listen lol. I'm going to write a book one day Titled "So you wanna own a restaurant " it will be a collection of horror stories, shattered dreams and dumbassery of epic proportions. There are way easier ways to make money in this world.
