Dad was in SAC, we were in NC at Seymour Johnson AFB during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He was just gone one day. His boss called and said he would be gone for an undetermined amount of time. He was allowed to call home three weeks later and was home the following week.
He was at Nellis when he left the service. He had 27 years and wanted to make 30 but mom said she was "taking the kids to San Antonio" so he retired. Mom did not like all the gambling in Nevada.

He did not speak about what happened when they were found and I have no doubt that they were drummed out but what he said is that everyone knew they were there and few did anything about them.

When I went in in early 73, saying you were gay, got you out of the USAF. One of the guys in our barracks was gone after the 3rd day. He was the same one that we could hear whimpering a few times. Now, they would probably give you another stripe and a double bed if you said you were gay.

In my 28 years of service,(1966-1994) all those I knew who were discharged, were not discharged for being Gay, but were discharged for Fraudulent Enlistment. And during the early days, after serving a bit of time incarcerated.

Early 1973 as well, we had several who disappeared the first couple of days.

Thirty years ago even the military believed in Judeo-Christian principles. Now the military is Godless. Immoral is immoral in my book.

I work on a military facility, I see blatant fraudulent enlistment at least once a week, if not more often. Previous unreported arrests (10 or more), Numerous meds, BH and other not reported, Numerous BH and physical conditions that are not authorized not previously reported, I am talking about current issues not stuff from childhood, on meds NOW, mentally hospitalized as few as several months ago. I have brought the issue up with Numerous JAG officers, COC, medical and Behavioral. Most if not all of them wind up in BH or WTB/ WTU for a year or more before being medically retired with huge lists of ailments, they never actually serve in any way. No punishment that I can see now to lie. I was told by a full COL to "stay in my lane" and not to worry about it. As a Soldier for 24 years, now with 36 years serving the Army total, It just irks me that we are So coddling now, I have actually seen senior NCO's reprimanded for correcting privates who were inappropriate. Many of these soldiers leave with more ailments than a CSM who retires over 30 years. Now as far back as I can remember there has always been gays in the Army both men and women, everyone pretty much knew, most of them were some of the hardest working, smartest most trustworthy people, we all just pretty much pretended we didn't know. It takes a lot to push someone out now, every private has his congressman on speed dial.

I remember in the 70's if you got in trouble in civilian life, some times you were given the choice of jail time or joining the service. Did help out some folks, sounds like those days are long gone.
