As long as it does not smell or look foul its fair game.

The man wants you to consume more and more... those are just guideline dates not hard facts in my experience. Lots of variables at play. How cold is your fridge? How cold was it in the store? If a dry goods item was it kept in a cool dry place?

Again, those are guidelines in many cases for me.

I keep it until it goes bad, which is always a date well beyond the expiration date on the package. The expiration date on the package is the date the store needs to have it sold by, it doesn't apply to the consumer.

There are sell by dates on some and best by dates on others. Sell/freeze by is also seen. Just depends on the type of food, I think.

If it’s a “wet” food I toss it close to the expiration date, dry stuff like the rice I will extend

Ummmm. That is incorrect.

I was a bread man for Rainbo/SaraLee in a former life (15 years). Our bread had a shelf life of 2-3 days(friday and Monday’s deliveries were pulled mon-thurs, respectively) and the date codes were 7days. The date code was the day it was sold by the pound to hog farmers. It was sold in a thrift store for the last four days it was coded at pennies on the dollar.
I know all DSD services were similar.

We couldn’t even sell the “in code” 3-day old bread to prisons and jails unless it was BEFORE the end of the 7-day date.

I get irate when I go to a store nowadays and see 4+day old bakery products for sale. I generally, still to this day, grab em and throw them into the back room somewhere.

Agreed. I will only agree to throw it out if a quorum of eaters claim it tastes foul...never before tasting though and only if the objections rise above whining.

About a month and a half ago I ate leftover pizza for breakfast. It was in the fridge for a few days...he it’s just me here. I had the worst day followed by the worse night, 7pm till 4 am I was on the throne both ways.

For some reason that changed my life in a way...that’s another post, but I weight 20 lbs less and feel great

FYI, I check all food now for expiration dates, crazy when your alone and don’t realize how long food sits in the fridge/pantry.

In 1975 we were eating C Rats that were packaged in 1955. Even the cigarettes were still good. Today if it's expired it gets thrown out.

I hear ya, when my kids were younger we made them drink milk with chunks in it, if they whined we smacked the heck out of them
