It is not about extras.

I am retired military. We were promised medical care for life. Somewhere along the way they decided it cost too much to live up to their promise. So, even though my service entitles me to Tricare for Life...I cannot use it unless I pay for Medicare. I effect, Medicare is primary, then Tricare is supplemental. Crazy, huh?

Precisely correct. I could even have borrowed the money from my 401 at a very low rate.

My point...don’t be ignorant. I was ignorant. I think my retirement planner should have warned me of this when I did the withdrawal...but that’s a different discussion.

Absolutely should have

I don’t make any significant financial decisions without first consulting my CFP and the first topic covered is what are the tax implications

During the first two years after I retired, I made some significant financial moves that skewed my income and I went to the Soc Sec Office twice with more updated tax returns and they reduced my Medicare payment

IRMMA. Told ya. If you garner any income from stocks etc. and it exceeds a certain amount, then you must pay even more damn Medicare than most everyone else. But sometimes you have to pay the piper. It sucks and there are those that want to tax you even more. Let that sink in.

Just for grins and giggles, have you confirmed that someone else (using your SSAN because he / she doesn't have one) isn't causing income to show up on your account? It happens more than you'd think. I've investigated a few of those; in one a college student in Nebraska was unable to qualify for discounted housing because a store manager in Texas was using the student's SSAN, and the student's "income" -- which he knew nothing about -- disqualified him from the affordable accommodations.
