I received a letter from Social Security saying that according to the IRS I made $125,000 in 2018. Therefore my Medicare payments will increase significantly.

Hmmmm. I only have two sources of money in my retirement...and combined they come out to not much more than half that. What gives?

Seems I took out money from a 401K to buy a camper. Since this was untaxed, I pulled out enough to cover the tax bite. IRS considers this income even though it is used to pay taxes. Seems fair???

Here’s the deal. A single person can only make 89,000 dollars. After that...Medicare gets more expensive. Mine went from about $60/ month to $ 249.

So, I tried to explain to the social security agent this was a one time deal...not happening this year. His response...tell it to the IRS.

Words cannot describe how much I hate dealing with government.

You did not pay taxes when you put the money in the retirement plan so yeah, seems fair. The good news is that if your income the next year fell below the $89k level your medicare premium will fall back down. If others on Medicare expect to make a big purchase funded with untaxed retirement dollars they should think about making the withdrawals across two calendar years.

Please understand this is over an above the taxes I paid when removing untaxed money from my 401K. That seems reasonable...but having to shell out $250 more per month for something I already paid for...seems unfair to me.

So in hindsight, you should have taken out a loan for the RV and then made extra payments on it each year by taking funds from your 401(k) plan but not enough to exceed $89,000 total income.

I get it - period.

This doesn’t address your specific point, but might help the sting...

It appears you qualified (below $75k in 2019) for the free Covid money being slung around in 2020? If so, maybe you can (at least in your mind) consider that as a chunk of pre-paid-to-you “make good”. I’m assuming you’re in the “received but didn’t have to receive to stay afloat” group.

$250 new monthly premium - $60 old monthly premium = $190 more/month or $2,280 more/year
$2,280 - 1,200 stimulus = $1,080/year or $90 more/month...or a total of $150/month (old + new)

There’s talk of another round too...which might get you back to whole for the 1 year you have to gut it out.

Precisely correct. I could even have borrowed the money from my 401 at a very low rate.

My point...don’t be ignorant. I was ignorant. I think my retirement planner should have warned me of this when I did the withdrawal...but that’s a different discussion.

ph, are the increased payments for the side plans?

I just have basic medicare with no supplements so don't know for sure how all that works but I think it is income based for the supplements.

I am billed separately for my Part F Supplement-Medigap if you will- but my Part D Prescription Plan comes out of my Social Security check along with the usual Part B.

Here is a link to the Medicare page showing the premium amounts as a function of income (2 years prior).

Then there is the little issue of paying income tax on of up to 85% of SS earnings and it not that much extra income that triggers the tax.
