So when you locate an "area" offshore that has what you are looking for ..do you then just zig zag different angles trying to find rocks, logs, etc? What view on your graph do you use when trying to locate the sweet spot on these areas and/or actual fish and where they are relating?

I'm going to attempt to tackle this offshore fishing starting now and want to listen to all advice and strategies.

Thanks

Best thing I could recommend is searching "Donald Harper" on here. He has a 30+ part series in the bass fishing section talking all about offshore stuff with detailed pics and all.

Or pm me your email address and I'll send you a pdf file with all the text from his posts. Couldn't get the pics for some reason but there are over 50 pages and 34k words in the series so far!

Best video I have seen was by Bradley Hallman on YouTube, he goes over fishing offshore in the summer.

Yep, Don Harper on TFF. I'm teaching myself off shore fishing this summer and Don's articles were a huge help. Caught my PB last night on Lewisville. 8.22 [Linked Image]

It's definitely a "learned" skill. But that doesn't mean it is hard. I started fishing offshore years ago because the fish were generally larger ... weather and other things didn't bother them as much ... and it was less crowded.

Just experiment on any place you see. Down-current is usually best if there is any current present. And the "rougher" the bottom the better. Old house foundations and other scrubby things were always what we looked for. Fish these areas slowly and use patience. And remember that you are usually fishing water that holds FEWER but LARGER fish. It may take an hour to get bit. Sometimes longer. I've seen prime places that wouldn't give up but 1-2 bites in a 4-5 hour period. But those bites were worth the wait. You have to get your mind made that you are going to see the area through for a while.

Don’t discount trolling either! I used to fish walleye before moving to Texas in ‘06 and I was surprised to find nobody trolls deep cranks for bass down here. Some of my best bass have come trolling crankbaits on points and Creek channels in the summer and fall. It’s not just a matter of dragging baits behind a boat mindlessly. Running lures at precise depths, across multiple angles to hit key spots on the spot takes careful boat control and close attention to electronics. Speed can be an essential component too. Sometimes 3 mph is the ticket. Sometimes 1.5. The advantage is you can cover lots of water to identify key spots, then slow down and extract fish with jigs or Carolina rigs of you want. Tournaments don’t allow trolling because it is effective and efficient. But it’s the best way to keep your lures in the water and at a constant depth. And that can be crucial for pressured bass.

This right here is good advice.....Also long lining cranks over these areas have been awesome over the years. 1 cast make take you 10 minutes but it can be worth it.... And having 300 series reels that hold a lot of line. I'll also do the same thing with large swimbaits. Lots of time getting it down there but the payoff can be good.

And I just got back from Lake Erie catching 10#+ walleye in 30-40ft of water. I couldn't wait to get back to Texas and start doing the same here for some big bass. I'll be somewhere Saturday doing this very thing.... Then I'll get board and go frog fishing smile

Had one of my best catching days ever on Fork trolling DD-22s in 25-30'!! Lots of 2-3lbers and hybrids!! Used the big motor to get them down quick then went to idle and let em bounce off the bottom and BAM hooked up!!

Read his post more slowly, he isnt asking how to fish or what you fish.
