Renew online, you will get a printable receipt to keep with your current license till the new one comes in. Takes about 5 minutes.

You can't renew online every time. If you don't yet have a Real ID compliant license, you have to go in to renew.

I stood in line for an hour only to be told I had to have my birth certificate. I say take every thing with you because you never know what mood they may be in.

You can renew a year in advance of expiration, don't wait until last the month and you definitely need a passport or birth certificate.

I went to the Hurst office and had a 3 hour line outside, drove 35 mins to Decatur and waited only 15 mins.

Me, my wife and daughter all went at the same time about 3 months ago. Mine would expire this December and theirs in a couple years, but they got a letter saying to get renewed now because of the new ID requirements. All they wanted was our money and new picture and kicked us out. I'm 68 and wife 65

I am seeing some inconsistencies in rule enforcement here from location to location grin We did have all of our stuff and I mean a folder full of documents, and all she asked for was our old drivers licenses. BUT, we had our forms all filled out already that we printed out at home. It may depend on whether or not you look like a meth-head or not, I don't know

I renewed the first week of this month. I had received a letter a couple of months before telling me I was not eligible for online renewal and told me what I needed for ID. They required my old license and either a passport, birth certificate, or official ID card (whatever that was). I took my passport which they scanned into the system and checked my old license, which they returned when I left. After a new pic and a vision test, I was on my way. Perhaps it is different elsewhere, but thats what I had to do a few weeks ago.

I stood outside in the line at Megacenter Carrollton one afternoon this week for 30 minutes. What a joke. The line barely moved at all. I gave up and will try later at a smaller location. Guy out there with some political petition that visited with us said get there around 6am and not Monday or Friday. He also, said and I concur from trying the on line reservation deal to reserve your spot in line is a joke. In all but about 15 minutes in the morning the system is blocked as all the spots are already taken.

I did not have the "STAR" on my old license and had no problem renewing online in June and now have the gold star. The DMV I went to would not accept my passport and said only my birth certificate would be accepted. I have renewed the last 2 times online, the 3rd time it may have to be in person though. Maybe I just got lucky.

This stuff is ridiculous and not new. The state should be able to provide better service to the taxpayers than this. Moving here from Arkansas, I was appalled at the state services in Texas. This was 20 years ago, and my opinion hasn't changed. The buildings are nice, but nothing is going on inside. If you don't get there at the absolutely right time of the day and day of the week, you are screwed.

Here is Plano last Friday at 7:20 am (40 minutes before they open), 3rd time I stopped by there...The line actually continues around the other side of the building. I went again at 4pm, was thrilled to see there wasnt a line. Park and walk in. Lady stops me at the door. No, sorry, if you dont have a number, were closed for the day, not taking any more people. Apparently at some point during the day they just stop taking numbers. Lady says that if you get there at 8am its a minimum 6 hour wait time.

I also concur with the online reservation being a joke, as well as the phone reservation, or even the odds you could get an actual person on the phone.

No wonder, none of the people pulled over on Live PD have a license. They should subcontract out to some 3rd party and pay them a fee. There could still be checks and balances because even if you get in to renew, you don't get a new license in the mail until 2 weeks later.
