I was out there yesterday @HLS, had a lil success.... I just don't know where to post u0 at welch with the water going down. Driving across the dam i could see 5 or 6 huge schools going crazy at dusk but i can't reach them. Where do you recommended fishing at welch?

I caught that huge hybrid/striper first cast at the spillway at like 9:30pm on a tiny jig. Next cast caught the smaller one. I broke off a few times after that and i was exhausted so i didnt fish there long, the spillway is rough at night on the rocks.

Do the whites school in the morning there as well or are they better in the evenings? I am just wondering if it would be worth bringing my kayak out to Welch to drop in this weekend. As always, I appreciate the advice.

From my experience the schools of white/hybrids will be out of reach from the shoreline bank at Welch most of the day. Only very early in the morning when the lake is quiet will they be close enough to the shore to catch them from the bank or wade fishing. I have used my kayak to chase them but even that is hit or miss with these fast moving schools.

Yea when i was driving across the damn and the light coming through the clouds was right, you could see at least 5 or 6 schools, if i had i kayak i could def. Reach them. I couldn't from the bank. Did my pic work on my previous post? Pretty sure that's a hybrid and not a striper right? I'm about to head out thwre now and see what we can catch. I'll probably go to welch first then spillway later when it dies down. Tough to find a good spot at welch right now with all the dang people out there. I heard birch creek is open again, not sure if there's fishable water there or not from the bank. I just love being out there on a clear night sky, the stars are amazing. Can't see that kinda stuff here in Houston.
HLS and JMoe, you guys still do any fishing out there? I had a good time reading through yalls old posts on here from years ago when the lake was pretty much the same level during the same time of the year.

I've had several events over the last three years that have resulted in me fishing far less than ever before. J-Moe has a new job that keeps him off the water and has directed a lot of his fishing to other water in pursuit of more fly fishing records.. State Fly Fishing Records

I can almost guarantee this feeding pattern in the spillway is happening again.. this is from the 2015 flood..

Bank fished main lake on Sunday morning. The water was calm until about 8ish then some wind kicked up and shut down the bite for me. No white bass for me but handfuls of small black bass mostly caught when the lake was calm. Tried the spillway mid morning and had no luck even with my go- to lures.
Saw a guy catch a white bass at the spillway mid morning. Was that you Trav281?

Forgot to mention that there are not many good banks spots at Welch right now with the lake being this high. People are launching boats there.
