That made me sick to my stomach. What if the snake hit the baby in the eye and the kid lost eyesight over it? Then what? Cultural norm? I think not. Absolutely sickening.

Its their culture. Some things we do here in America, they view in the same manner as we view letting an infant play with a deadly snake. Doesn't matter. German "culture" in WWII said it was okay to kill Jews, gypsies, the mentally-handicapped, etc. It is wrong because it it wrong. YOU'VE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME! Those people think of that kid playing with that snake the same as I would let mine play with my lab, and you're going to compare them with Nazi Germany? GOOD GRIEF!!!

Reading your posts is just killing me guys. I'm a HS teacher and I've taught Geography a number of years. One of the things I always try to cover is "Cultural" Geography. Only your own ignorance can keep you from understanding the real reasons why people in other countries and cultures do the things they do.
That kid is in no more danger than your own playing with a labrador retriever or a common house cat. Either of which could turn on a kid any moment they choose with dire results. Step outside the box and think about that one for a moment.

I would much rather take my chances with a labrador than with a cobra..not everyone is going to agree on the subject because we do value our traditions as being correct, as do they. But that doesn't mean that you should think of others as "idiots" when they're simply acting out of emotion for the safety of a child.

I don't suppose you know the definition of the term "idiot" do you? It simply means uneducated. These guys are popping off and making crude remarks about these people and they know absolutely nothing about them or their culture. Yes, the video is shocking to those who have never seen such a thing. But before you go off making comments about something, you could at least educate yourself on the subject. Jeeezz, you've got the internet right there for goodness sakes. People should look up some info on those customs and that culture BEFORE they start making themselves look like idiots.

Maybe it's a good thing you teach geography, your definition of uneducated would offend a lot of individuals if you called your students idiots just because they didn't know something. There's a big difference between constructive criticism and demoralizing statements.

Here's what makes them idiots! Say that child comes across another snake that hasn't been defanged. That child is too young to know this. He/she is going to think "Wow, just a light tap to the head!" Kids need a natural fear of snakes, later they can learn respect of God's creatures when they are old enough to make rational decisions.

I love this. Rednecks with computers. How many of you have had to buy new monitors cause you couldn't see through the white out from previous typing errors??? I know I bought 3 so far!!
Gosh spazzmann, you feel strongly about this. It may be their custom, but it still gives us ALL the willies seeing it. Snakes are dangerous, defanged or not, but none of us like seeing a child put in front of something we are either scared of or have a great deal of respect for.
If that little german kid got hurt from that snake, then we wouldn't have anyone to go over and fight in the future war against the "towel-e-ban" JEEEEZZZZZ we aint' all idiots

Look deeper into your dictionary and you'll find the word idiot is based in Greek. Dig a little further and you'll find that indeed one of it's meanings is "uneducated".
