Better question...why would you not use a net during a tournament??? ummmm Because the bigger trails I fish have made them illegal?! Bassmaster. No nets. Real man fishing. So do you pretend you are fishing the Classic when you are fishing your 2-3 boat tournanents? Bahahahahaha

I have a very simple rule if I'm fishing in a competitive situation or not and regardless of the size of the fish.If there is a chance I will regret losing the fish, I net it...if not, I don't.

Sunday at squaw there was a red legend fishing near us. I watched them net some 2 lb fish. It was shameful behavior and we laughed hey that was me

If money is on the line only confirmed dinks and wrong species dont get the net. Also would much rather see a fish netted with our modern nets than boat flipped onto carpet and multiple hard objects.

In my last tourney on day one I netted and weighted in a 12.5" spot that came off in the net. That fish was the difference between 4th and 3rd place and $400.00. I would have never got that fish in if I tried to boat flip it. If the rules allow it I use it to my advantage. I did not know if the fish was a spot or a largemouth at the time.

I am a firm believer it is bad luck to get the net out before a fish is caught. So what usually happens is we hook a fish, scramble to get in the rod locker to get the net, knock a rod in the lake, then net the 14 incher. It's a perfect science.

Fished a Bud Light tournament on Hubbard Creek a few years ago. Caught a 3.5 lber early and partner got the net out and netted him. Left the net out all day. At 1:30 with 1 fish in the boat he picked the net up. I almost immediately caught fish #2. Picked up net and caught fish # . At 2:30 i noticed net was out so i picked it up and my partner caught fish #4 and we got 2nd place. Now my net stays buried. i figure the harder it is to get to, the bigger the fish. I usually net almost every fish AFTER i lose a 4 or 5 lber. ive lost several when fishing solo trying to net them so now I try to lip the better fish.

I have definitely tried to boat flip a 2lber and it come off mid flip, only to weigh-in 4 fish and be a lb out of the money. Generally my fishing partner and i have good chemistry when it comes to netting fish so its a judgement call, but for now on we net until we have 5 in the box regardless of size. As long as nets are allowed i think it wise to use all the tools at your disposal. While fun fishing the net sits in the box so unless someone hung a big fish it will remain locked up. Just my approach

I use to hardly ever use a net and lost a few because of it. Then I went through a phase if using it for every fish, which after a while seemed like a waste on the smaller fish and I felt sometimes I lost a fish because I'm trying to net it by myself and it would have been better to flip it in.
Now I use the net selectively. This past weekend, I hooked into a 4.5lber. I didn't have the net out and was going to try it without. But a few seconds of fighting I got the gut feeling to use the net and it worked out.

I use the net on all fish that appear to be keepers in a tournament. I had the hook pop out of a 9.62 in a tournament last year but my partner already had it in the net. I guess if I already had 25 pounds I wouldn't use it on 15 inch fish.
