Every time you have a big fish take off strip drag and break you off I bet you could of prevented it with thumb spooling. All line will dig into the spool somewhat while using a bait caster unless the drag is supper lite I believe the line digging the spool has a huge affect on the line breaking and on pulling the hook loose.

All that being said I don't thump spool braid and have only thumb spooled 20lb line once and that was a 9lber. Most of the time I'm using this technique while fishing 10-15lb line

It's a lot different fighting a bass from the sitting position in a kayak. Much easier to control them from the deck of a boat. I've had to free-spool a number of times when fighting fish on a kayak, especially when they dart back under you. A big redfish could flip you.
The solution to any problem - work, love, money, whatever - is to go fishing, and the worse the problem, the longer the trip should be. --John Gierach

Wired2Fish article on cinching your drag down and thumbing the spool to get fish out of timber.

I typically always thumb the spool on big fish. I feel like i have the control rather than taking my focus off of the fish while messing with drag.

PUI don't get one lol....What kayak is that and what size? Crankster! You actually came in here?! Ok, here is my kayak: https://m.dickssportinggoods.com/p/futur...p;color=SeaweedYou should pull the trigger if she's at $249.99 or less! This kayak is GREAT for anglers just getting started on a yak! Decent tracking and stability! I'm 150 pounds and some change, though. Please keep in mind capacity!

I've seen the drag on a $450 reel slip and/or stick. The only reels I trust the drag on are spinning reels. If I've got a big fish (6+) on a bait with trebles while throwing a baitcaster, I'm thumbing them every time.

i was taught to have the drag set a little loose and then thumb the spool if needed to stop a fish in an emergency. but then i had the old school ambassadors to learn with.
