If you scuba dive, Cozumel is world class. A 40 minute water taxi across. 80-85 degree water and 100'-200' visibility. There are resorts and time shares there also.

Stayed in a RIU all inclusive in the Bahamas and was very happy with the trip and their pricing compared favorably to the more common big names.

Ocean Coral and Turquesa in Cancun is really nice. You must go to the Coco Bongo. It was a blast. Stay away from the excursions, they aren't all cracked up to be... I completely agree on the point about excursions. We have been down there quite a few times done some of the excursions but found he most enjoyable time to be just stay at the resort and enjoy the beach, pool, free food, and of course free booze. Some of the resorts have decent snorkeling by that I mean reef right of the beach. Nothing to be compared to snorkeling in Jamaica but still fun.

On the subject of excursions, that's a personal preference. I don't drink much. I don't care for pool time and I'm not the kind of girl to do a spa day. The only use that I have for a beach is to fish off of and if I wanted to sit back and relax for a few days, I take a staycation. If I'm going on a trip, I want to get out, explore, do something fun, etc. If you're wary of the resort's excursions, go online and plan your own. There are plenty of things to do in Playa.

Xel Ha is an awesome excursion. If you dive you can do a cave dive at Chech Mal or something like that. It was one of the neatest things I have ever done. Total darkness and gin clear water.
