Ok so they have a lateral line as well. I get that helps with vibration and movement of prey. But if I'm sitting on the bank in the dark. With a jig below a bobber not really moving it. How are they keying in on that? Are you guys using scent spray?

I use no spray of any sort, no niblets or any of that stuff. Just plain ole jig on a jig head, and i assume crappie are not blind and can see as well as feel. Whatever it is that they use, they were slamming the beejeebers out of my jig, chiprat's jig, steve's jig, and Kingoffish's jig last night! Chiprat took home some dandy crappie, as he was the only one keeping anything. That's too much science for me, all i know is, i drop jig down, crappie see, smell or feel jig(whatever), crappie bite jig, I set hook, crappie comes topside!

Who cares about all the science, just catch em for the sheer fun of fishing!

They don`t have those BIG EYES for nothing! They see very well in low light conditions.

If fish could not see, swim and feed, in the dark they would all be extinct. C'mon common sense tells ya they can see and swim around in pitch dark river, creek, stream, lake, stock tank, gravel pit, and various assorted waters. Geez! God knew what he was doing. Give the designer some credit! My dad and i used to fish some gravel pits in carrollton back when i was in high school where it was so dark, you just cast, retrieved and hoped for the best, yet we would fill an ice chest just about on every trip! Back then there were no limits on crappie, size or quantity. The only light we had was when the big jets took off from DFW and flew over the pits and the giant "headlights" they have would shine on the water for a few seconds. But the crappie would bite, not just bite, but slam hard. If we used bobbers, they would hit the jig so hard(spawn time) that it would make a loud slap on the surface as they would yank it under! We couldn't see it either, we'd hear or feel and set the hook!

On occasion we would build a fire, but the bite was so good in the dark we figured light might spook em.

Ok I've been schooled! All that's left is for me to go out and try it.

I feel ya cyclefish. It's hard for us to imagine how anything sees through their eyes. It would be pretty cool to see a scientific recreation of what a fish sees in the dark in a way that makes sense to humans. I've seen something like that for what bees see in the ultraviolet spectrum.
