Hey,

Got the 999ci HD Si unit and its all installed except the ducer. Is there any good videos on where and how to install the thing. Dont want to do it till i know its done right the first time. Going to intsall on transom or jack plate whichever is better in your opinion. Im a recent Lowrance user and love my new HB units, 859 in front and 999 at consol.

Buttons not working.

I have a 798ciHD purchased in April 2011.

I had not updated the software for a couple of years (I was running 5.4 I think) , so I thought I would do so. I downloaded the current version (7.680) from MyHumminbird to a blank SD card, restored the factory defaults on my unit, and updated the software.

The update completed successfully. I used the unit the same day as I updated it and had no issues. However, I was playing with the unit to recreate the views and settings I had used previously and began to have issues with some buttons not functioning, particularly the power and exit buttons. I removed the unit from the docking station on my boat and reseated it to ensure that I had made good connections, but still had the same problems. The power button works to turn the unit on and exit button works to escape the default warning just after the unit reboots, but neither work after that. I believe I also lost two of the three presets (I don't recall if they reset to a different screen or stopped working altogether like the power/exit buttons)

Any thoughts?

Presets go back to factory Default when you do the Default setting.

Did you do another Restore Defaults after the software update?

If the boat in your signature is yours, the proper installation for it is a shoot-thru XP 9 20 dual beam 2D transducer, and the SI transducer attached to the jackplate. Connect the two transducers to the display with the AS SIDB Y cable.

Look at the installation photos on the Bass Boat Central website for Skeeters. You have hull sponsons that have to be allowed for.

Wayne,

No, I did not. I will do this on Friday and report the results.

Of course, that is why I referred you to the installation pictures so you can see what it takes for your hull design.
The product is Transducer Shield and Saver.

You may want to mount it on a hole shot plate in the center of the jack plate. Wayne sent me a photo of an image where the transducer was mounted on the side of the JP and it picked up a little bit of a shadow on the opposite side. The hole shot plate for mine was only $45 and along with a good sonar image I get a three second hole shot. I mounted it with a Transducer Shield and Saver mount.

You need more clearance that just attaching it to a hole shot plate as Bob suggested. The Skeeter hull sponsons block some of the SI pulses.
You could do that by adding a spacer and wedge to the transducer mount.

A hole shot plate is a good idea to prevent echos from inside the jackplate from being displayed when using the side attachment method.

A particular hull design has to be considered when mounting a Side Imaging transducer.

Yes, I realize that I lost my presets. I had put them back in, but the buttons did nothing when pressed.

Restoring factory defaults a second time appears to have fixed the problem. You're a genius Wayne!

Oops. Not so fast. It passed the initial check, but failed the full fishing test. I was navigating to a marked brushpile, when I lost all Nav. The Nav page was gone from the main menu and the power button would no longer turn the unit off. It looks like my unit will need to go home to 'bammy.

Any other thoughts before I ship it back? Do you know how long the warranty is?

Check the health of your battery. GPS/Mapping issues are a symptom of low voltage. Power button also.
When you loose the Chart and Nav menus, that is because the unit does not recognize the GPS antenna. POWER.

I'll check the power next w/e. I'm a bit skeptical that battery is the culprit though, as it is only a year old and I lost the GPS/mapping while the motor was running. The graph is connected directly to the starter battery. I looked at the self-test screen, but I can't recall the voltage reading. The only other thing I noticed was that it was pretty warm. It's close to 100 and in the sun, so I didn't think too much about it.

Thanks for all of your help. Humminbird support said "restore factory default again and if that doesn't work, send the unit in for repair".
