Pardon my ignorance, but do you recommend checking against a newer battery? A battery with more amp hours? Or a battery with more voltage? Or some combination of the three?

At least a fully charged, healthy battery with good connections to the unit. What that small of an aH rating, nothing else connected to it.

Got it. Will do some testing with a friend's battery that he purchased a week ago. I will also check the angle of the transducer (saw one user that fixed his problem by rotating it slightly). And I will consider a factory settings reset as well.

Thanks again.

Update: I was finally able to get on the water and try to fix my Helix. I started by moving my Ram mount over 2" so the transducer arm was pointed straight down (versus angled under my kayak very slightly; I didn't know this was happening). Then I performed a reset to factory defaults. One or both tweaks fixed my problem, and I was able to read beyond 27'. Didn't have to swap out the battery. Woot!

Thoughts on settings.

Please list opinions on setting for the 998 hdsi unit if you have one. I fish for whites/hybirds/striper mostly and sometimes crappie, I was going back and fourth between 200, 83 and 200/83 and sticking with 455 instead of 800 due to 800 washing out. also, what other settings do you mess with. Sensitivities or anything? I seem to only find bait balls and only sometimes find fish on downscan and sidescan, 2d seems to work better for actual fish and I would like to get better images on downscan and sidescan. I was in a boat with an HDS gen 1 by Lowrance the other day and they seem to be the opposite: great images on sidescan and downscan and not so good images on 2d thinking of switching to simrad or lowrance but would like to know if my unit could be better with different setting..

Thanks in advance

I only fish on days that end in Y!

have not done an update to my 998 hd si since I bought it in may of 2014. I know that there have been some software updates since then but did not want to risk messing it up. What have I missed out on?

When you bought it makes no difference, it's the day it was made.
That is the first six digits of the serial number.

My question is on updating. Do you need to update in order of release dates or can you just download the latest and be fine. The last update I have is 7.090 and now its up to 7.67 or something like that. Sorry if this has been asked before. Thanks in advance

The current software version has everything the older versions have. You can't skip any updates.

Well I ddid not do any updates, I made setting adjustments on DI and SI and now I have great images when I find schools of fish. I used the setup that was recomended earlier on this thread. Thx for all the help guys! No as far as updates. If I like what I am seeing do I really need to do any updates?

You never HAVE to update the unit software unless a feature you want is added via software update.
