I don't think there is a lot to be concerned with unless they are taking more than their share of what the law allows.

I'd wager the summer temps kill at least as many as fisherman. Trout cannot survive long in water above 70 degrees as they can't feed. If it hits 80 then it's definitely lethal. Broken Bow averages 77-78 through July and August. If you get two to 3 weeks in the 80's (happens ever few year)those not sitting in discharge will starve or asphyxiate. As you could imagine the Guadalupe section below Canyon is the same story, just hotter. The daming of these rivers in the 60's created aquatic desserts in the tail races as the year round cold water drives most of the natural species and their prey downstream. If it weren't for the stocked trout there would be little to fish for unless they started stocking Striper or other similarly cold tolerant fish. The decision to year after year stock literally tons of trout in these tail races has far more to do with business than biology. They are put there to sell fishing licenses and support the local economy. They are there for the license holders to catch and if desired, harvest for the table. (within the limits of the law of course).
I'd be very curious to see creel surveys to compare the number of licenses sold to those keeping fish vs. those practicing C&R, but from what I've seen there it's well over 3 to 1 on the bank.

There are plenty of trout streams that need your help in asking for additional protection and regulation from over exploitation, pollution, etc. However, I think you will be hard pressed to find a biologist who would put LMF or the Guadalupe anywhere on that list. I'd wager many would argue the dams should never have built in the first place. That all being said, enjoy them for what they are, keep on educating your fellow anglers about the laws and if you see one being broken report it!

If the canyon lake has one day full before summer, they will let enough water flow through the guad to keep temps cold enough all summer to sustain trout. The issue is is we need one day.

I understand why they stock trout in both places, but I am a firm believer in not keeping them for the hopes that they may survive. Maybe I'm just an optimist but it is a numbers game.

Zone II does not get to 77-80 degrees. Ever. Zone III that is a possibility I would think. The flow above the powerhouse is from the bottom of the dam - so Zone I rarely exceeds 65-68 degrees, even in August. Trout can and do survive year round in Zones I and II. Just check out the fall run fish caught in November and December! There is a reason the LMF is listed as one of the 50 best tailwaters in the U.S.

Keeping fish is all good.... but if you are putting them back for any reason, they need to be handled with a little more care. I C&R 99.8% of the fish I catch, but occasionally a friend will want to grill a stocker.

Love the chatter on here

Thanks golferJeff I just thought I was crazy for a bit. I mean I worked 13 hours one day heard the bite was on on the white packed the rods headed out got there just before dawn. I fished my butt off till 6pm was a fantastic day. Headed back and worked 13 hours the next day. Hmm guess I am crazy but not about that. One of the best nights I ever had was in zone two in July. I couldn't get to the fish unless I was waist deep. Sun started coming up they finally slowed down I thought I had hypothermia coming out of the water. I ran the heater in my truck an hour before I hit the road.

Split cane spot on. Hey Planokeith loved the video of you on sandies. You are 100%absolutely right. But I know you have not flyfished for too long. Go to the lmf at this point and it will make you vomit at the amount of violations. I too have told people hey don't want you to get a ticket but.... I get a big fu as they sit in the lawn chair chunking bait in red zone and literally drop kicking fish to small for them to keep back in. I have slowly shifted my economic donations to the white river or Colorado versus that short trip to Oklahoma where I would spend all the money I am now taking elsewhere.
