Bout 10 secs is the longest I pause even in really cold water. Seems like an eternity tho. Try this.. Rod in one hand and a drink in the other. I thought it was a snickers in the other hand?

I was on the water during the Classic on Grand lake. Air temps in the upper teens to low 20's. Water temps in the mid to upper 40's. I was around Christie,Ike,KVD,Cherry,Evers and every single one of them were throwing a jerkbait. The guy who had the longest pause between jerks was Hank Cherry. He was waitng 5-7 seconds. On day one I watched KVD throwing a jerkbait with a 2-3 second pasuse(at best). He caught 4 keepers on 5 casts. Two of those culled. Go back and watch some of the video. Bottom line is you have to let the fish tell you what they want. Each day is different, and may times the "count" will change through out the day.

KVD really whips a jerkbait hard too. That guy is unreal and really sets his own style. I've been jerkbait fishing this entire month with a lot of success (not counting the past 2 days) and I have been getting away with 2-3 second pauses as well, in fact most of the bass I caught this month on them were in between twitches and not on the pause. i have my own style that seems to work for me especially in the 50 to 60 degree water and I love to use the Megabass 110's doing this but when the water gets colder I think its pretty hard to beat the action of an LC pointer SP. I've been reading a lot about jerkbait fishing lately as I'm sure most people have been as well and there are some pros out there that wait as long as 30 seconds at the beginning and probably in the middle of their retrieve as well. I'm not so sure I can do that without a tv, a book or something... maybe in the summer but in the cold for some reason I just get impatient, even on 5 second pauses. Twitch, twitch, check your Facebook, twitch, twitch write a letter, twitch, twitch, order some crankbaits! The past 2 days the water has been 49-51 and no matter what I tried I couldn't get them to hit it. I caught one dink on a jerk and lost another that I pulled the hook out of his mouth. I had more success early in the morning on topwater's but after 8:30 it was lockjaw. Hopefully a few more degrees in the next day or 2 will make a difference.

Cadence for me today was twitch twitch, pause for 5 count, jerk, pause for 5 count. Caught 9 fish in 4 hours no big ones but they were crushing in on the pause after the single jerk. Every fish hit it on that pause.
If you want to come gain some confidence in jerkbait fishing I would gladly Swap you trips. I'll take you on kiowa and if your happy with the experience fishing a jerkbait you can take me on texoma and we will go catch some on jerkbaits out there.

I have won two tournaments on different lakes where it was post cold front conditions during a pre spawn.. Both times some fish had already moved up when the cold front hit. I found a sharp ledge that was in front of a spawning cove. After the cold front, the fish that had moved up pulled out to this ledge.. while the fish that were coming in had also stopped here. You could see them on the graph.... The ONLY way I could get bit was on a suspending jerk bait.. The ONLY way they would bite it was to throw it past the ledge, crank it down and let it SIT. shake the rod tip then let it sit some more. shake the rod tip-- get out your lip balm and let it sit some more. Every so often when you would pick up on the rod it would load up..... It was a brutal way to fish and extremely hard to commit to.... However both of those were two day tournaments that I won by a good margin.
