Open water with no snags, try a Carolina Crankbait. Sounds retarded, but catches fish!

What is the tell tale sign that these are either Crappie or Sandbass? I've been trying to interpret what is shown all the graph, but it is all just colors to me.

This works, use a Sq Bill, they are more stable...those deep fish haven't see a Sq Bill......

It looks like the main group of fish is suspended at 17-18 feet. in 40 feet of water. Just curious how a carolina rig would pull a crank through that depth? A 6 foot leader would cause the crank bait to run around 34? Do you let the c-rig sink to the bottom and feed 15 feet of line back through to let the crank float back up? Try to count the crank down and start the retrieve?

I've thought about carolina rigged cranks in the past but never tried it.

Larry. They were bass. Came across spot and it lit up like a Christmas tree with arcs. Quickly stopped and threw out a cr fluke rigged on deck and got one around six on the second cast. The arcs with heavy yellow suspended over the small tree in about 34 ft are bass. I have only seen a couple of times that white bass gave that heavy of a return and they were pigs. You can also see the fish on the downscan over the top and around the Vertical trees on the bottom. This picture was after a bit of time without a bite and I was leaving. I drove across where I had been casting and went "Really!!!" lol thanks guys for the input.

When you guys mark fish deep like this, do you throw out a marker and back the boat away a certain distance and then fish them? or do you stay in the spot over the top of them?

I would use a dropshot rig with two hooks and a rubber band line for the weight.

Another way of dropshot: use a long fluoro lead (e.g. 10 foot long) with a movable hook (e.g. like http://www.tacklewarehouse.com/VMC_Ike_Approved_Wide_Gap_Spinshot_Hooks_4pk/descpage-VMCWGSS.html) and put a stopper at 10-20" from the weight. The weight will sink much faster than a bait, giving much more time to bite before the bait reaches the stopper at the bottom. I'll try it myself today.

On a serious note, I can't catch suspended fish either tried for several hours Monday and gave up threw the tackle box at them. Would like to see what people recommend.

Larry check out this post to see what sand bass or hybrid look like on graph. This link is what I usually see when they are whites. If bass are mixed in you will see arcs in the mix.
